How many days do you need for a Nile cruise?

For most people 3 nights from Aswan or 4 nights from Luxor is enough: same river, same temples. Pay for 7 nights only if you want slow days on deck, and for 12–14 nights only if you want Middle Egypt by boat.

How many days does a Nile cruise need? Three nights is the honest minimum and four is the comfortable standard. Both cover the same stretch of river, about 200 km between Luxor and Aswan, and the same eight big sites: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae and the Unfinished Obelisk. Anything shorter cuts sights or time; anything longer either repeats the loop or goes somewhere different, such as Dendera, Abydos, Lake Nasser or Middle Egypt.

Days or nights: how to read a Nile cruise listing

Platform listings count calendar days, not nights. On GetYourGuide a "3-Day" cruise is 2 nights, "4-Day" is 3 nights, "5-Day" is 4 nights and "8-Day" is 7 nights. An "Overnight" cruise is one night spread over two days. Ships and tour operators usually quote nights, so put every offer into nights before you compare prices.

Direction comes with the length. Ships run a weekly loop: 3 nights downstream from Aswan to Luxor, 4 nights upstream from Luxor to Aswan, joined back to back into a 7-night round trip. Read more in Luxor to Aswan and Aswan to Luxor.

Listings also say "5-star ship or similar" instead of naming the ship. Whatever the length, ask the operator for the ship's name, your cabin deck and the list of included entry fees before you pay.

How many days do you need for a Nile cruise?

Length Typical route What you see Who it suits
1 night Aswan → Luxor, part of a run Part of the programme only Almost nobody; poor value
2 nights Mostly Aswan → Luxor Most core sites, rushed Short trips with a fixed flight
3 nights Aswan → Luxor All core sites, two full sightseeing days Most first-timers
4 nights Luxor → Aswan All core sites plus Kom Ombo after dark and an Aswan afternoon First-timers who want breathing space
5–6 nights Esna → Aswan by dahabiya, or longer luxury programmes Quiet stops, Dendera and Abydos on some ships Second-timers, small-boat fans
7 nights Round trip Luxor or Aswan Core sites once, plus free days on board Those who want rest days and slow river views
12–14 nights Cairo ⇄ Aswan Middle Egypt, Amarna, Abydos, Dendera, then the classic route Enthusiasts with two weeks and a big budget

Our view: 4 nights from Luxor if your dates allow, 3 nights from Aswan if they don't. Both are the same cruise; the 4-night is simply less rushed.

Short Nile cruise: 1 or 2 nights

A short Nile cruise exists mainly on the platforms. Neither Sonesta nor Mövenpick publishes a 2-night programme; agencies put you on a ship for part of its 3-night run. That means you join or leave mid-programme, and the sightseeing that falls outside your nights is simply missing.

The numbers show the problem. From Aswan: Overnight Nile Cruise to Luxor with Meals costs from $550 for one night, while the plain 3-night From Aswan: 4-Day Nile Cruise to Luxor with Guide is from $450. The 2-night Aswan: 3-Day Nile River Cruise to Luxor with Guided Tours is from $590 and rated 4.5 by 76 travellers, the best of the short options.

If two nights is all you have, the 3-day Nile cruise guide explains which days you lose. With one day only, skip the cruise: a felucca sail or a day trip gives you the river without paying for a cabin you barely use.

3 or 4 nights: the standard cruise between Luxor and Aswan

A standard Nile cruise means a 50–80-cabin ship, full board, a guide and temples almost every day. On Sonesta St George and Mövenpick's Royal Lily the 4-night leaves Luxor on Monday and the 3-night leaves Aswan on Friday. Other ships use other days: Luxor on Thursday and Aswan on Monday (Steigenberger Minerva and Royale, JAZ Crown Jubilee, Mövenpick Sun Ray), or Luxor on Saturday and Aswan on Wednesday (Steigenberger Regency, JAZ Elite Viceroy, Esplanade, Concerto). Choosing your dates effectively chooses your ship.

  1. 0 kmLuxorStart or end of every standard cruise. Ships moor along the East Bank and at private docks south of town; Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank are visited from here.
  2. 50 kmEsnaAbout 50 km upriver. Ships pass the Esna lock (two ships per lockage), often at night; many ships stop here overnight without visiting the temple.
  3. EdfuBetween Esna and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus is visited by horse carriage or coach from the quay, usually in the morning.
  4. Kom OmboRiverside temple, open for entry until 20:00: upstream ships stop at dusk, downstream ships come early in the morning.
  5. 200 kmAswanAbout 200 km by river from Luxor. Philae, the High Dam and a felucca or motorboat round Kitchener's Island; last night of a dahabiya trip at the Aswan bridge dock.

Distances along the river, rounded; ships also stop at the Esna lock and sometimes moor at Kom Ombo for the night.

What the extra night buys, using Sonesta St George's published timetable:

  • 4 nights from Luxor: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the first afternoon, the West Bank on day 2, Edfu at 10:00 and Kom Ombo at 18:30 on day 3 (the temple admits visitors until 20:00), then the High Dam, Philae and a felucca or motorboat to the Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island in Aswan.
  • 3 nights from Aswan: the High Dam and Philae on the first afternoon, Kom Ombo at 09:00 and Edfu at 14:30 on the same day, the West Bank on day 3, and Karnak and Luxor Temple from 08:30 on the last morning, after you have checked out. The Botanical Garden is not on the programme.

On both, much of the sailing happens between 03:00 and 06:00. The best daylight river views are between Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan. The full day-by-day timetable is on Sonesta's itinerary page.

Most 3-night platform listings add excursions. The best-reviewed is From Aswan: 4-Day Nile Cruise to Luxor with Abu Simbel and Balloon Flight, from $580 and rated 4.5 by 555 travellers. Here is the same type of package on two platforms; ship, cabin, inclusions and dates may differ:

5 and 6 night Nile cruises: dahabiyas, Dendera and Abydos

Five or six nights is where the trip changes character rather than just getting longer.

  • Dahabiya, 5 nights Esna → Aswan. Traditional sailing boats with up to about ten cabins start at Esna, skip the Esna lock and stop where big ships cannot, such as El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila. Nour El Nil sails southbound only, on Monday and Tuesday, from September to May. The Luxor sights are not part of the cruise, so add a day or two in Luxor first. See dahabiya cruises.
  • Oberoi Philae, 6 nights. It runs 4-night and 6-night one-way cruises; the 6-night adds Dendera and Abydos. Read the Oberoi Philae review.
  • SS Sudan, 5 nights Luxor → Aswan. The 1921 paddle steamer sails north first to Qena for Dendera and Abydos, then south.
  • JAZ Elite Senator leaves Luxor every Thursday for 5 or 7 nights; its 7-night loop includes Dendera.

On the platforms, the 5-night option is a dahabiya: Luxor to Aswan: 6-Day Dahabiya Nile Cruise with Ancient Tour, from $1,400, rated 4.1 by only 9 travellers.

7 day Nile cruise: the round trip

A 7-night (8-day) Nile cruise is usually the 4-night and the 3-night legs joined on the same ship, starting and ending in Luxor or in Aswan. The sites are not visited twice. On Sonesta's timetable the repeated visits become "free time", so you see the same temples as on a 4-night cruise and then have three or four quieter days on board.

Is a 7 day Nile cruise worth it? Only if you want river days, not more sights. It suits people who want rest days between temples or a winter week on deck. If you want new sites, pick a 7-night with a different programme: Oberoi Zahra's 7-night adds Dendera and an optional Abu Simbel day, and JAZ Elite Senator adds Dendera.

Ships built around 7 nights include TUI's own ships (winter round trips from Luxor with flights from Gatwick and Manchester; see the TUI review) and MS Ciela, formerly MS Opera, on Mondays from Luxor. Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways put a Luxor round trip inside a Cairo package.

On the platforms, 7-night listings have very few reviews: Luxor: 8 Days Nile Cruise, Balloon, Guided Tours, Abu Simbel is from $1,400 with 8 reviews, and From Aswan: 8-Day Nile River Cruise to Luxor with Guide is from $1,258 with 2. An operator that sells the 7-night directly may be the safer choice. The 7-night cruise guide compares them.

Long Nile cruise: 12 to 14 nights from Cairo

Almost all "Nile cruise from Cairo" packages fly you to Luxor or Aswan. The real long cruise is one ship: Mövenpick's MS Darakum, sailing 14 nights from Cairo to Aswan and 12 nights from Aswan to Cairo. It runs from mid-February to mid-November, with no long cruises in June–August or December–January, and makes about six or seven departures each way a year.

It adds what short cruises never reach: three nights in Cairo with the Grand Egyptian Museum, Minya (Beni Hassan, Tuna el-Gebel), Tell el-Amarna, Abydos and Dendera, then the classic stretch from Luxor to Aswan. In the UK, Riviera Travel sells it as a 14-night fly-cruise from £7,589 per person for a November departure, flights included.

The historic steamer SS Misr makes occasional charter cruises on the same route, and Viking has announced a 19-day Grand Nile Journey between Cairo and Aswan by river, from $14,999. For the full picture see Nile cruises from Cairo.

Price per night by cruise length

Divide every offer by its nights: the plain 3-night is the floor, and very short cruises cost the most per night.

Two costs rise with every night. Tips: agencies suggest roughly US$5–10 per person per night for the crew and US$10–15 per person per day for the guide; the ship usually announces its figure at the welcome briefing. Drinks are extra on most ships. Entry fees do not rise with length, because the 3-night and 4-night visit the same sites. Most listings don't say whether fees are included, so check "includes"; if they are not, budget about EGP 4,060 per adult (students half). Current prices are on the official ticket shop.

Fitting the cruise into 7–12 days in Egypt

A typical trip: two or three nights in Cairo, a flight of about an hour to Luxor or about an hour and a quarter to Aswan, a 3- or 4-night cruise, optional Abu Simbel or a balloon flight, then a flight home or a few days on the Red Sea.

  • 7–8 days: Cairo 2 nights + 3 nights from Aswan + 1 night in Luxor, or Cairo 2 nights + 4 nights from Luxor.
  • 10 days: Cairo 3 nights + 4 nights from Luxor + 2 nights in Aswan for Abu Simbel, which needs a start around 03:30.
  • 12 days or more: add a dahabiya, Lake Nasser or the Red Sea, or take the long cruise.

The Abela sleeper (train 86, Giza 20:15 → Luxor 06:10) arrives in time for a noon embarkation. Check when to go before fixing dates: several ships, including Mayfair's and some Mövenpick ships, don't sail in June–August.

Nile cruise length: questions

How many days do you need for a Nile cruise?

Three nights (a "4-Day" listing) from Aswan to Luxor covers all the core sites. Four nights from Luxor to Aswan covers the same sites at an easier pace and adds Kom Ombo after dark and an Aswan afternoon. That is enough for a first visit.

Is a 7 day Nile cruise better than 3 or 4 nights?

Only for rest, not for sights. A 7-night round trip joins the two legs on the same ship and does not repeat visits, so the second half is mostly free time. Choose a 7-night with Dendera (Oberoi Zahra, JAZ Elite Senator) if you want new sites.

What is the longest Nile cruise?

Mövenpick's MS Darakum sails 14 nights from Cairo to Aswan and 12 nights back, from mid-February to mid-November. Viking has also announced a 19-day Cairo–Aswan journey.

Is a 2 day or overnight Nile cruise worth it?

Rarely. A one-night cruise from Aswan costs from $550 on the platforms, more than a 3-night from $450, and you see only part of the programme.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

Yes, if you plan to see Luxor and Aswan anyway: the ship is hotel, restaurant and transport, with Edfu and Kom Ombo on the way. Check what the price includes.

Are Nile cruises safe?

The UK Foreign Office places the Nile valley between Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel outside all its warning areas. It also notes accidents on Nile cruises caused by overcrowding and poor safety standards, so book through an established seller and read the current FCDO advice.
