The best dahabiya Nile cruise is the one whose route, weekday and price basis fit your trip. A dahabiya is a traditional sailing houseboat with a handful of cabins; most have no engine and sail upriver with the north wind, towed by a tug when it drops. Seven names cover almost every serious option: Nour El Nil, Djed, Lazuli, Ashranda (Nebyt, Nuun & Nuut), Merit, Sonesta Amirat and A&K's Zein Nile Chateau. For the basics, start with our dahabiya guide.

Nour El Nil: the benchmark dahabiya fleet

If you want one name, it is Nour El Nil. Nine boats (Dendera, Najafa, Poppee, Roman, Adelaïde, Agatha, Meroe, Malouka and El Nil), about ten rooms each, one itinerary: five nights from Esna to Aswan, southbound only. It publishes its full day-by-day and live room prices on its own site, nourelnil.com.

The inclusions are the real argument: transfer from your Luxor hotel or airport to Esna, entrance fees, guide, meals and taxes. Alcohol and the Aswan airport transfer are extra, and a 25 % deposit is due within 14 days of confirmation.

The cheapest way in is El Nil, the smallest boat. Dendera is billed as the newest. Ask about tipping when you request the booking: the operator does not publish a figure.

Best value dahabiyas: Djed, Nuun & Nuut and Merit

Djed is the cheapest published entry to the proper Esna → Aswan route: €330 per person per night in a cabin, €415 in a suite (two sharing; singles €490 or €650), on djedegypt.com. Its four boats leave on four different weekdays (The Orient Saturday, Nora Sunday, Zekrayaat Monday, Loulia Thursday) for 4 nights upriver, with 3-night downriver runs from Aswan. The easiest fleet to fit around flights; check what the nightly rate includes.

Nuun & Nuut, Ashranda's twin boats sold by Memphis Tours, start in Luxor on Monday (4 nights) or Aswan on Friday (3 nights) at US$1,157–1,807 per person in a double, about US$390–450 a night. Memphis Tours asks for a 50 % deposit.

Merit (Merit 1 and 2) runs 4 nights from Luxor on Saturday and 3 nights from Aswan on Wednesday, with hot tubs on deck. An Egyptian agency quotes about US$1,815 per person for 3 nights in high season.

Best luxury dahabiya Nile cruise options

  • A&K Zein Nile Chateau: six cabins and suites for twelve guests, including the 108 m² Farouk suite, with a plunge pool. Sold only as a private charter with a bespoke route; rates on request from A&K Sanctuary. Children of any age. See our A&K Sanctuary review.
  • Nebyt: six cabins and a terrace suite for up to twelve, sold by Memphis Tours at US$2,674–3,650 per person for 3–4 nights. It sails only when at least two or three cabins are booked, so confirm the departure before you book flights.
  • Sonesta Amirat: five cabins and two terrace suites on a 7-night Luxor–Aswan trip from Saturday, sold all year at US$3,350 per person in a double. Sonesta, the group behind Sonesta St George, also lists an Amirat II.
  • JAZ Molouky and Yakouta: six suites each, 5 nights between Luxor and Aswan or 7 nights round trip, embarking in Luxor. Strict published terms: 25 % deposit, full payment and 100 % cancellation charge inside 45 days (dahabeyat.com).
  • Mövenpick SB Feddya: four balcony suites, tailor-made 4–7 nights (Mövenpick).
  • Oberoi Melouk and Malekat: two seven-suite dahabiyas announced for late 2026 (Egyptian Streets). Check they are sailing before you plan around them.

For bigger luxury ships with pools and spas, see the best luxury Nile cruises.

The classic route: Esna to Aswan in five nights

Most dahabiyas start at Esna, skipping the Esna lock queue and the Luxor–Esna stretch. The catch: Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are not in the cruise. Book a night or two in Luxor first (things to do in Luxor).

El Kab costs EGP 200 and Gebel el-Silsila EGP 100 for a foreign adult. The government requires dahabiyas to spend the last night at a dock by the Aswan bridge, the least scenic mooring of the trip. Itineraries can change at a few hours' notice with river levels. Aswan's own sights (Philae, the Nubian village) sit outside the cruise: see things to do in Aswan.

Dahabiya reviews: what guests praise and what they complain about

Independent reviews of Nour El Nil, the most written-about fleet, praise the slow pace, the extra stops, family-style meals, the interiors and the crew. They list the downsides too:

Pros

  • Stops large ships cannot make
  • Ten rooms at most, warm crew
  • Moorings at islands and quiet banks
  • Entry fees and guide included (Nour El Nil)

Cons

  • Towed by a tug on calm days; boats may travel in convoy
  • Communal "house-party" dining is not for everyone
  • Standard rooms are small (13–17 m²); weak showers mentioned
  • No pool; Wi-Fi relies on the mobile network

Some itineraries advertise a swim from the bank. Don't: UK health advice is not to swim, wade or bathe in the Nile because of schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

On GetYourGuide, the only dahabiya listing with a real track record is the 3-night Aswan → Luxor trip rated 4.8 from 58 reviews; the 5-night Luxor → Aswan listing sits at 4.1 from 9.

Booking a dahabiya on GetYourGuide

GetYourGuide sells a handful of dahabiya cruises run by Egyptian agencies, and none names its boat. That is fine if you want the format more than a brand. After booking, ask the operator for the boat's name, the cabin type and which entrance fees are included. Most GetYourGuide bookings can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead, but multi-day cruises may differ: check the listing.

Multi-night felucca sails from Aswan in the same lists have one review or none; a felucca is not a dahabiya (felucca rides).

Which dahabiya for families, solo travellers and summer

  • Families: only Najafa, Poppee, Roman and Adelaïde (all Nour El Nil) have Deluxe Suites sleeping four with two bathrooms, but Nour El Nil charges children as adults. Zein takes any age. More in Nile cruises with kids.
  • Solo travellers: Djed publishes single rates (€490 a night in a cabin); everywhere else, ask.
  • Summer: Nour El Nil does not sail June–August. Djed and the Memphis Tours dahabiyas publish summer prices, and Sonesta Amirat is sold all year; expect afternoons around 40 °C. See when to go.

Not dahabiyas: names that confuse

  • Nebu is a 40-suite luxury motor ship with a pool, not a dahabiya. Nebyt is the six-cabin dahabiya.
  • Lazuli is a fleet, not "MS Lazuli". Its L'Orient is not Djed's The Orient.
  • Zekrayaat belongs to Djed, not Nour El Nil.
  • Alyssa is a motor ship marketed as a yacht; Cairo's "Nile Dahabiya" is an evening dinner cruise.
