The best Nile cruises: ships and trips ranked on what counts

For most travellers the best Nile cruise is a well-rated 3- or 4-night sailing between Aswan and Luxor, from $450 on GetYourGuide. The best ships themselves (Oberoi, A&K, Nour El Nil's dahabiyas) are booked direct or through agents, never on a platform.

The best Nile cruises are not the ones with the most stars on the brochure. Most ships sold to foreigners call themselves five-star, and the label covers everything from a tired 150-guest hull to a 22-cabin Oberoi. So we rank on things you can check: how many cabins share the quay and the temples with you, whether there is a balcony, what the price really includes, whether the company publishes its rates, and whether the sailing day fits your flights.

That gives two very different answers. If you want to book online tonight, the best Nile river cruises are a handful of platform listings with real review counts behind them. If you want the best ship, you are looking at a short list of luxury boats, dahabiyas and international lines that no platform sells by name. This page covers both, and says which famous options we would skip.

What makes a Nile cruise the best: five things to compare

A Nile cruise for most visitors is three or four nights between Luxor and Aswan on a ship of 50 to 80 cabins. The two directions are halves of the same weekly loop, and almost every ship visits the same temples: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. What separates a good cruise from a forgettable one is everything around those visits.

  1. Size. Small luxury boats carry 32 to 76 guests; standard ships carry 100 to 150 or more. Fewer guests means quicker embarkation, smaller temple groups and a calmer sun deck.
  2. Balconies and mooring. At busy quays ships often tie up side by side, so your window may face the next ship. Do not pay extra for a "Nile view" on a standard ship. A&K and Oberoi use their own private landings, which is part of what the luxury price buys.
  3. Inclusions. Entry fees, the guide, drinks and tips vary more than the cabins do. Oberoi, A&K and Mayfair Cruises include entrance fees; a cabin booked direct with Sonesta or JAZ does not.
  4. Transparency. Very few companies publish a price list. Those that do (Mayfair Cruises, A&K) are easier to trust and to compare.
  5. Weekday and season. Ships leave on fixed weekdays and several stop sailing in the summer heat. Choosing your dates often chooses your ship.

Best Nile cruises you can book online today

GetYourGuide sells 64 multi-day Nile cruises and packages, and none of the Luxor–Aswan listings below names its ship. An Egyptian agency assigns "a 5-star ship or similar" and tells you the name after booking. That makes the review count and the inclusions the only fair way to compare them. These are the best-rated listings with enough reviews to mean something:

Our top-rated platform cruises

1

Travellers starting in Luxor who want Abu Simbel in the package

Rated 4.6 from 132 reviews, from $690 for 4 days and 3 nights with guided visits and the Abu Simbel trip.

2

Aswan starts with the Luxor balloon flight included

Also 4.6, from 76 reviews, from $686 for 3 nights; the balloon is the main extra over the plain cruise.

3

The best all-rounder for first-timers

4.5 from 555 reviews, from $580 for 3 nights Aswan → Luxor with Abu Simbel, the balloon and an Egyptologist.

4

Couples who want a small sailing boat, not a ship

Rated 4.8 from 58 reviews, the best score among the platform's cruises: 3 nights on a luxury dahabiya from $1,100.

Our pick for most readers is the Aswan → Luxor trip with Abu Simbel and the balloon. It costs about $130 more than the plain 3-night cruise with a guide (from $450). Bought separately, a Luxor balloon flight costs from about $70–96 on the platforms, and Abu Simbel needs an EGP 822 ticket plus transport, so the bundle is fair value rather than a bargain. It does save you organising a 03:30 start and a dawn balloon pick-up yourself.

The same trip is sold on Headout, so compare before you book:

Best Nile cruise ships by category

No ship wins on everything. These are the category winners we can defend with published facts. For the full shortlists, see the best luxury Nile cruises, the best dahabiyas and the best budget cruises.

Best value with published prices: Mayfair Cruises

Mayfair Cruises (the ships Mayfair, Esplanade and Mayflower) is one of the few Nile companies that publishes a full rate sheet. It quotes $230–330 per person per night in a double cabin, and the rate includes sightseeing, monument entrance fees and airport transfers. So a 4-night cruise in January costs $1,320 per person before cabin supplements, with almost nothing to add at the temple gates. The catch: no sailings June to August, and one blog review notes the Mayfair has no lift. The rate sheet is on mayfaircruises.com.

Best inclusions: Oberoi and A&K

The Oberoi Zahra (28 cabins and suites) and the Oberoi Philae (22) include monument entrance fees and the guide in their rates. The Philae's 4-night programme adds Tutankhamun's tomb and Ramses VI as standard; both cost extra on an ordinary cruise. Neither Oberoi ship sails in June. Oberoi publishes no public rates; a UK agent sells a 13-day trip built around the Zahra from £8,495 per person, excluding flights.

A&K Sanctuary (formerly Sanctuary Retreats) publishes the only full luxury rate table on the river. Its Sun Boat IV costs $3,235 per person for four nights in a Nile Deck cabin in October–November and January–March; its June–August 2026 rate was $1,654. Entrance fees, excursions and meals are included; flights, transfers, drinks and tips are not.

Best new ship: A&K Nile Seray, and the Soleil

A&K's Nile Seray, new from November 2026, has 32 suites, each with at least a Juliet balcony. Its programme includes the tombs of Seti I and Ramses VI and an after-hours visit to Tutankhamun's tomb, from $6,077 per person for four nights. The Soleil, launched in late 2024, has interiors by Egyptian architect Vanessa Victor and an indoor pool in a double-height spa. Its price varies by a factor of two between sellers, so ask several agents for a quote.

Best heritage experience: SS Sudan

The SS Sudan is a paddle steamer launched in 1921 for Thomas Cook; Agatha Christie sailed on it in 1933. It has 24 cabins and suites and runs a 5-night programme that sails north to Qena for Dendera and Abydos, then visits Ramses VI's tomb. It is sold only inside tailor-made trips (in France about €5,200–7,000 for 8 days) and takes no children under 6.

Best dahabiya: Nour El Nil

Nour El Nil runs nine dahabiyas (traditional sailing houseboats) of about ten rooms each, sailing Esna → Aswan in five nights from September to May. They stop at El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila, which the big ships cannot. Prices are per room, in euros, for the whole cruise: from €6,600 for two in a Luxury Room in high season, entry fees and guide included. Luxor's sights are not part of the cruise, so add a night in Luxor first.

Best international river lines

Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways sell the Nile as 12-day packages with Cairo hotels, flights and a 7- or 8-night Luxor round trip that adds Dendera. Viking starts from $6,999 for 12 days and includes beer and wine with lunch and dinner. Uniworld ($6,099–20,849) is unusual in including all gratuities. You cannot buy their ships as a plain cabin, so they suit travellers who want the whole holiday organised.

Best Nile cruise: Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?

Both directions visit the same core sites on the same ship. The upstream run from Luxor takes 4 nights and is the more relaxed version: Kom Ombo at dusk, a free afternoon in Aswan with the Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island, and the Esna lock passed in daylight or the evening. The downstream run from Aswan takes 3 nights and squeezes Kom Ombo and Edfu into one day.

On Sonesta's published timetable, the 3-night Aswan → Luxor trip looks like this:

Aswan to Luxor, 3 nights (Sonesta St. George timetable)
  1. Day 1

    Aswan

Board at 12:00; High Dam and Philae in the afternoon, then a motorboat ride and a Nubian show

    Moored in Aswan

  2. Day 2

    Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo at 09:00, Edfu at 14:30, galabeya party (the long Egyptian robe) in the evening

    Sails 06:00, moors at Esna

  3. Day 3

    Valley of the Kings

West Bank from 07:30: Valley of the Kings, Medinet Habu, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon

Leaves Esna 03:30, through the lock at night

  4. Day 4

    Karnak

Check out at 08:00, then Karnak and Luxor Temple 08:30–12:00

    Book a flight after 13:00

The day-by-day is on Sonesta's itinerary page. Our verdict: take the 4 nights from Luxor if your dates allow, and the 3 nights from Aswan if you are adding Abu Simbel and want to finish in Luxor for the flight home. Both directions are covered in full in our Aswan to Luxor guide.

  1. 0 kmLuxorStart or end of every standard cruise. Ships moor along the East Bank and at private docks south of town; Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank are visited from here.
  2. 50 kmEsnaAbout 50 km upriver. Ships pass the Esna lock (two ships per lockage), often at night; many ships stop here overnight without visiting the temple.
  3. EdfuBetween Esna and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus is visited by horse carriage or coach from the quay, usually in the morning.
  4. Kom OmboRiverside temple, open for entry until 20:00: upstream ships stop at dusk, downstream ships come early in the morning.
  5. 200 kmAswanAbout 200 km by river from Luxor. Philae, the High Dam and a felucca or motorboat round Kitchener's Island; last night of a dahabiya trip at the Aswan bridge dock.

Distances along the river, rounded; ships also stop at the Esna lock and sometimes moor at Kom Ombo for the night.

What the best Nile cruises cost

Prices fall into clear bands once you compare them per person per night. Standard 5-star ships sold by agencies run from about $114 to $215 a night in summer and winter. Luxury ships start where those end, and a dahabiya priced in euros can pass €1,100 per person per night.

What a night on the Nile costs, by type of boat
  • Budget 5-star shipAgency packages with guide and usually entry fees, summer to winter: Semiramis III 4 nights $455–645, Nile Shams 3 nights $406–616, Royal Viking 3 nights $436–646; GetYourGuide's plain 3-night Aswan→Luxor from $450USD 114–215
  • Upper 5-star shipMayfair Cruises' published per-night rates incl. sightseeing and entry fees ($230–330, Christmas $400); agency fares for Nile Dolphin, Concerto II, Salacia, Acamar and Medea, 3–4 nightsUSD 198–525
  • Luxury shipA&K's published 4-night rates: Sun Boat IV Nile Deck $1,654 (June–August) to $3,235 (Oct–Nov), Nile Seray from $6,077; Historia and Nebu agency fares sit at the lower endUSD 388–1,519
  • Dahabiya (priced in US dollars)GetYourGuide's 3-night dahabiya from $1,100; agency fares for Nuun & Nuut, Sonesta Amirat (7 nights $3,350) and Nebyt (3 nights from $2,674)USD 367–891
  • Dahabiya (priced in euros)Djed Egypt €330 per person per night in a cabin, €415 in a suite; Nour El Nil prices per room for 5 nights (€6,600–11,300), divided by two guestsEUR 330–1,130
  • UK cruise package with flightsTUI River Cruises, 7-night all-inclusive round trip from Luxor with flights and transfers, from £1,499–1,785 per personGBP 214–255
  • International river lineWhole package incl. Cairo hotels and internal flights, divided by 11 nights: Viking 12 days from $6,999; Uniworld 12 days $6,099–20,849USD 554–1,895

Typical per-person prices per night in a double cabin, full board, checked on 19 October 2026; Christmas, New Year and Easter cost more.

A few anchors from published rates:

  • Cheapest well-rated: 3 nights Aswan → Luxor with a guide, from $450 on GetYourGuide (about $150 a night).
  • Agency budget ships: Nile Shams from $406 for 3 nights in summer; Semiramis III from $455 for 4 nights.
  • Transparent mid-range: Mayfair Cruises $230–330 per person per night, entry fees included.
  • Luxury: A&K Sun Boat IV $3,235 per person for 4 nights in autumn; Historia from $1,339 for 3 nights through an agency.
  • UK package with flights: TUI's own ships, 7 nights all-inclusive from £1,499–1,785 per person in recent winters, but only the Edfu and Kom Ombo visits are included.

Summer is cheaper; A&K's table halves between autumn and June–August. But it is above 40 °C, and Mayfair, Nour El Nil, both Oberoi ships (June) and three Mövenpick ships stop sailing. Full price detail is in our Nile cruise prices guide, and season planning in when to go.

Entry fees, tips and what the price leaves out

The biggest surprise on a cheap cruise is the bill at the temple gates. If your package excludes entry fees, the eight sites of a standard cruise cost EGP 4,060 per foreign adult (students half price). That is before Tutankhamun's tomb (EGP 700), Seti I's tomb (EGP 2,000) or Abu Simbel (EGP 822). Most GetYourGuide listings do not say whether fees are included, so check the "includes" list. Headout's 4-day 5-star cruise (from $325, no reviews yet) is the only platform cruise that promises them in its title.

Other costs to budget:

  • Tips: roughly $5–10 per person per night for the crew, in one envelope at reception on the last evening, plus $10–15 per person per day for your guide. The ship usually announces its own figure at the welcome briefing. Uniworld includes all tips.
  • Drinks: full board means meals, not drinks. Bottled water and alcohol are usually extra, except on Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways, which include beer and wine with meals.
  • New Year's Eve: expect a compulsory gala supplement on many ships; agencies quote roughly $50–180 per person.
  • Optional tours: the balloon, Abu Simbel and the Nubian village are sold as extras on many cruises, so check what your package already covers.

Nile cruises we would skip

The most-reviewed listing is not the best. GetYourGuide's 3-day Aswan → Luxor cruise with the balloon has the most reviews of any Nile cruise (657). But it is a 2-night trip for $1,000, rated 4.3. For less money the 3-night cruise with Abu Simbel and the balloon gives you an extra night, Abu Simbel and a higher rating.

Three more to avoid:

  • The 1-night "overnight" cruise from Aswan (from $550): the worst value per night on the platform, and you see one day of the river.
  • The 3-night cruise from Luxor with the balloon (rated 3.8 from 305 reviews, from $1,100): almost twice the price of the 4.5-rated Aswan trip with Abu Simbel and the balloon.
  • A 2.3-rated Luxor 3-day listing that still appears on GetYourGuide. Read the recent reviews before booking any cruise rated under 4.2.

Best Nile cruise companies: who actually runs the ships

Three kinds of company sell Nile cruises, and knowing which one you are dealing with explains most price differences.

  • Ship operators run their own boats and sell cabins direct or through agents: Sonesta (five cruise ships and two dahabiyas), Mövenpick (eight vessels), JAZ Voyages (which also operates the five Steigenberger ships), Oberoi, A&K Sanctuary, Mayfair Cruises and Nour El Nil. Booking direct often gets you the cabin and meals only; Sonesta's rates state that sightseeing is not included.
  • International lines and tour operators (Viking, Uniworld, AmaWaterways, TUI, Tauck, Avalon) wrap a ship into a full holiday. Viking and TUI run their own ships; Uniworld, Avalon and Tauck sail on other companies' ships.
  • Egyptian agencies and the platforms resell cabins on many ships as packages with a guide and usually entry fees. This is where the cheap prices are, and where the "or similar" clause lives.

The river carries well over a hundred cruise ships, so the same hull is often resold by many agencies under different package names. For family-specific advice (child prices, pools with shallow ends, minimum ages) see our best Nile cruises for families.

Booking the best cruise without surprises

  1. Pick the direction and length first: 4 nights from Luxor for a relaxed trip, 3 nights from Aswan if time is short.
  2. Check the sailing weekday against your flights; ships leave on different days.
  3. Read the "includes" list for entry fees, guide, Abu Simbel and balloon.
  4. After booking, ask the operator for the ship's name and cabin deck in writing.
  5. Budget for tips and drinks, and a New Year's Eve supplement if you travel then.
  6. Plan your last-day flight after 13:00 in case sightseeing follows check-out.

Best Nile cruises: questions

What is the best Nile cruise for a first trip to Egypt?

A 3-night Aswan → Luxor or 4-night Luxor → Aswan cruise with an Egyptologist and the entry fees included. On the platforms, the Aswan trip with Abu Simbel and the balloon (4.5 from 555 reviews, from $580) is the best all-rounder. If you want a named ship with published rates, look at Mayfair Cruises.

Which is the best Nile cruise company?

It depends on what you value. Oberoi and A&K Sanctuary include entry fees and a guide on small luxury boats; Mayfair Cruises publishes clear per-night rates that include fees; Nour El Nil runs the best-known dahabiyas. For a whole holiday with flights, Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways package everything.

Is the best Nile cruise Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?

Same river, same temples. Luxor → Aswan takes 4 nights and is less rushed, with Kom Ombo at dusk and a free afternoon in Aswan. Aswan → Luxor takes 3 nights, fits Abu Simbel easily and is cheaper.

Which Nile cruise ships rate best on Tripadvisor?

We do not rank on Tripadvisor because most ships are sold by agencies under package names. One ship shows a high score openly: SLH's page for the Historia displays a Tripadvisor rating of 5.0 from 584 reviews. Platform ratings judge the agency package, not the ship.

How much does one of the best Nile cruises cost?

A well-rated 3-night cruise starts at $450 per person on GetYourGuide. Mayfair Cruises' upper 5-star ships cost $230–330 per person per night with entry fees included. Luxury boats such as A&K's Sun Boat IV cost $3,235 per person for four nights in high season; summer rates are about half.

When is the best time for a Nile cruise?

October to April. December to February is coolest and busiest; June to August is cheapest but above 40 °C, and several of the best ships do not sail.
