Luxury Nile cruises: the ships, the prices and what you really get

A real luxury Nile cruise means a small boat, entry fees and an Egyptologist in the price, and ideally a private dock. On A&K's Sun Boat IV that costs $3,235 per person for 4 nights in autumn and winter; Oberoi includes the same and publishes no rates.

Most ships on the Nile call themselves five-star, so the label tells you little. A luxury Nile cruise is something narrower: a boat of a few dozen cabins, an Egyptologist and the monument tickets in the price, a dock away from the rafted public quays, and cabins or suites big enough to live in for four days. Only a small group of boats meets that test; they are sold mostly through their owners and high-end agents, and none of them appears by name on GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets.

Luxury vs 5 star Nile cruise: what the difference is

There is no public ministry list of rated Nile ships, and the "5-star" and "5-star deluxe" labels cover a wide range. Price alone doesn't sort them either. What does:

  • Size. Oberoi Philae has 22 cabins, A&K's Sun Boat III 16, the Oberoi Zahra 28, Nile Seray 32 and Sonesta Star Goddess 33. A standard 5-star ship carries 100–150 or more guests.
  • Inclusions. Oberoi and A&K include entry fees and a guide. A direct booking with Sonesta, JAZ or Steigenberger is cabin and meals only; sightseeing is charged on top. Across the eight sites of a standard cruise that is EGP 4,060 per adult.
  • Moorings. At busy quays ordinary ships tie up side by side, so the "Nile view" can be the next ship's cabin. A&K and Oberoi use their own docks.
  • What you see. Oberoi Philae's 4-night programme includes the tombs of Tutankhamun and Ramses VI; Nile Seray includes Seti I (EGP 2,000 on its own) and Ramses VI, plus after-hours visits. A standard cruise sells those as extras.

Cabin size is not automatically bigger. Oberoi Philae's cabins are 36 m², the Zahra's 26.4 m², but the standard cabins on A&K's Sun Boat IV are 15–18 m². You pay for the service and the programme as much as for the room.

Oberoi Zahra and Oberoi Philae

The two Oberoi ships set the standard most people mean by "the most luxurious Nile cruise". Both have an 11-metre temperature-controlled pool and a spa; both stop sailing in June. Oberoi's rates include all meals, return transfers, monument entrance fees and the guide, so the price you're quoted is close to the price you pay, apart from drinks and tips.

The Zahra sails 3, 4 or 7 nights, mostly from Luxor on Tuesday and from Aswan on Saturday. Its standard cabins have picture windows, not balconies; only the suites have a terrace with a whirlpool. The 7-night trip adds Dendera and an optional Abu Simbel day. Oberoi lists Travel + Leisure World's Best awards placing it first among river cruisers two years running.

The Philae is not new: built in 1996, it was rebuilt by Oberoi with 22 cabins instead of 58 and returned in late 2015. Its 36 m² cabins are the biggest standard cabins of the luxury ships, and its 6-night programme adds Dendera and Abydos. It is also sold by Lindblad–National Geographic (11–12 days from $13,512) and, with the Zahra, by Tauck ("Jewels of the Nile", 10 days from £8,990). A UK agent's 13-day Zahra trip starts at £8,495 per person excluding flights. Details on the Zahra's official page.

A&K Sanctuary: Sun Boat IV and Nile Seray

A&K Sanctuary (formerly Sanctuary Retreats) owns five Nile boats and is the only luxury operator that publishes a full rate table. Sun Boat IV's Nile Deck cabin is $3,235 per person for 4 nights in October–November and January–March and $4,235 over Christmas; the June–August 2026 rate was $1,654. Meals, excursions with an Egyptologist and entrance fees are included; flights, transfers, drinks other than water and coffee, and tips are not.

Nile Seray is A&K's newest boat: 32 suites, every one with at least a Juliet balcony, and two Royal Suites with full balconies and a private jacuzzi. Its programme adds the tombs of Seti I and Ramses VI and after-hours openings of Tutankhamun's tomb. It starts at $6,077 per person in November and drops to $3,839 in May. Children are accepted from 6 (from 10 on the other boats). A&K also runs Sun Boat III (16 cabins, rates on enquiry) and the 6-cabin dahabiya Zein Nile Chateau, chartered privately. See the Nile Seray page and our A&K Sanctuary review.

Luxury on the Monday–Friday rhythm: Sonesta, Historia, Soleil, Nebu

These ships run the mainstream timetable and are easier to slot into a holiday.

Sonesta St George is the flagship of Sonesta's seven vessels (57 rooms, including Presidential, Elite and Royal suites, and a pool with a shallow extension). Star Goddess is the boutique choice: 33 suites, each with a private terrace, and the only Sonesta ship leaving Luxor on Saturday and Aswan on Wednesday. Booked on sonesta.com, both are cabin and full board only: "sightseeing activities are not included in the rates".

Historia is in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection and can be booked like a hotel through SLH: 44 rooms, a heated pool, the Seneb Spa, same weekdays as St George. SLH shows a guest score of 4.8 from 88 reviews. Egyptian agency packages with guide and fees start from $1,339 (3 nights) and $1,719 (4 nights).

Soleil, launched late in 2024 with interiors by Vanessa Victor, has a sun-deck pool and an indoor pool in a double-height spa. Prices vary twofold by seller: about $1,279 for 3 nights with one agency, $2,280 for 4 days with another. Nebu is a motor ship, not a dahabiya: 40 suites including four solo cabins, a pool and a big spa, sold by US operators and from $1,408 for 3 nights (May–August) through an Egyptian agency.

Small and historic: SS Sudan and luxury dahabiyas

SS Sudan, the heritage steamer

SS Sudan is a paddle steamer launched in 1921 for Thomas Cook's fleet; Agatha Christie sailed on it in 1933. It has 24 cabins and suites, runs on batteries from 23:00 to 07:00, and sails 5 nights from Luxor to Aswan by way of Qena for Dendera and Abydos, with Ramses VI's tomb on the programme. From late November to mid-February low water changes the route. It is sold inside tailor-made trips: Voyageurs du Monde in France (8 days, €5,200–7,000), Original Travel in the UK, Extraordinary Journeys in the US (from $4,000). No children under 6. More in the SS Sudan review and on the ship's site.

Luxury dahabiya

For many people the most luxurious way down the Nile is a dahabiya, a sailing houseboat of 5–10 cabins that moors at islands rather than town quays. Nour El Nil's boats sail Esna to Aswan in 5 nights, priced per room in euros (from €6,600 per cruise for an Agatha Luxury Room); A&K's Zein Nile Chateau is a private charter; Oberoi has announced two dahabiyas of seven suites each. They have no pools, and on calm days a tug tows them. See dahabiya cruises.

This is also the one luxury format you can book on a platform. GetYourGuide's 3-night Aswan to Luxor dahabiya is rated 4.8 from 58 reviews, from $1,100 per person; the boat isn't named, so ask for it after booking.

River lines: the all-inclusive 5 star Nile cruise

If "all inclusive" matters more than a tiny boat, the international lines sell the whole trip: Cairo hotels, internal flights, guides and a Luxor round trip.

  • Viking: 12 Nile ships, all its own. "Pharaohs & Pyramids", 12 days from $6,999, with an 8-night Luxor round trip that adds Dendera and Esna. Beer, wine and soft drinks come with lunch and dinner. Not sold cabin-only. Viking review.
  • Uniworld: "Splendors of Egypt & the Nile", 12 days, $6,099–20,849, on the partner ships S.S. Sphinx or River Tosca. All gratuities are included, which is rare on the Nile.
  • AmaWaterways: 11 nights with a 7-night Luxor round trip including Dendera; from €2,740 cruise-only on the EU site, plus an Egypt air add-on from €539. Single supplement 50 % in cabins, 100 % in suites. AmaDahlia has no lift.
  • A&K's own journeys: 10 days, maximum 18 guests, 4 nights on Sun Boat IV and Abu Simbel by air, from £13,760.

TUI sells a 7-night all-inclusive cruise and stay from the UK, but its launch programme included only the Edfu and Kom Ombo excursions, and the "Sonesta St George" in its packages is the Luxor hotel, not the ship.

Typical per-person prices per night in a double cabin, full board, checked on 19 October 2026; Christmas, New Year and Easter cost more.

Read the basis before comparing. A&K quotes per person per 4-night cruise with fees; Oberoi needs a dated search; Sonesta's direct rate excludes the temples; river lines quote a whole package divided over 10–12 days. Summer is the cheapest window (A&K's June–August 2026 rate was about half its autumn rate), but June removes both Oberoi ships and July–August reaches 41 °C.

Over Christmas and New Year, A&K's festive rates apply from 23 to 31 December (Sun Boat IV $4,235, Nile Seray from $6,744), and many ships add a compulsory New Year's Eve gala supplement (agencies quote roughly US$50–180 per person). The full picture is in Nile cruise prices.

New luxury Nile cruise ships

New capacity is arriving fast. Nile Seray and AmaNubia are new from November 2026; Viking added Ptah and Sekhmet in 2026, with Geb and Anubis listed for 2027. Oberoi's two dahabiyas, Melouk and Malekat, and a 29-suite Waldorf Astoria ship on 4- and 6-night Luxor–Aswan runs are both announced for late 2026. Egyptian Streets has a round-up of the new luxury ships. A first season is a gamble: book a launch sailing only with flexible terms.

Booking a luxury Nile cruise

  1. Decide what luxury means to you: a small boat, a balcony, extra tombs, or drinks and tips included.
  2. Match the weekday: Oberoi Zahra Tuesday/Saturday, Star Goddess Saturday/Wednesday, Historia and St George Monday/Friday.
  3. Ask in writing whether entry fees, the guide, transfers and the extra tombs are in the price.
  4. Avoid June for Oberoi; compare A&K's summer rate if you can take the heat.
  5. Ask the seller which dock the ship uses in Luxor and Aswan.

Luxury Nile cruise: questions

What is the most luxurious Nile cruise?

The Oberoi Philae and Oberoi Zahra, and A&K's new Nile Seray, are the top tier: 22–32 cabins, entry fees and an Egyptologist included, private docks. Nile Seray adds Seti I, Ramses VI and after-hours Tutankhamun to the programme.

How much is a luxury Nile cruise?

A&K publishes $3,235 per person for 4 nights on Sun Boat IV in October–November and January–March (the June–August 2026 rate was $1,654); Nile Seray starts at $6,077. Oberoi gives rates only for dated searches. Historia packages start from about $1,339 for 3 nights through Egyptian agencies.

Is a 5 star Nile cruise all inclusive?

Rarely in the full sense. Viking, Uniworld and AmaWaterways include beer and wine with meals, and Uniworld includes all tips. Entry fees are included by Oberoi, A&K and most Egyptian agency packages, but not on direct Sonesta, JAZ or Steigenberger bookings, and most GetYourGuide listings don't say.

Can you take a luxury Nile cruise from Cairo?

Almost every "from Cairo" package flies you to Luxor or Aswan. The river trips that start in Cairo are Mövenpick's Darakum (12–14 nights to Aswan, a few departures a year) and Viking's 19-day Grand Nile Journey. See Nile cruises from Cairo.

Do luxury Nile cruise ships have balconies?

Some do. Every Nile Seray suite has at least a Juliet balcony and every Star Goddess suite has a terrace; the Zahra's and Sun Boat IV's standard cabins have windows only.

Can I book Oberoi or A&K on GetYourGuide?

No. They sell direct and through agents such as Tauck and Lindblad. On the platforms the closest thing is the 3-night luxury dahabiya from $1,100, which doesn't name its boat.
