Felucca ride in Aswan: the island loop, sunset sails and prices

Aswan is the best felucca water on the Nile: granite islands, cataract rocks and a fast, narrow river. A felucca ride in Aswan circles Elephantine and Kitchener's Island in about two hours, from $15 booked with hotel pick-up.

A felucca is the traditional wooden Nile sailing boat, with one lateen sail and no engine. Aswan is where it makes the most sense. The river splits around Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island, granite boulders of the cataract break the surface, and the West Bank rises steeply with the Tombs of the Nobles cut into the ridge. A felucca ride in Aswan weaves through all of that in about two hours, close to the rocks.

Unlike Luxor, where a sail is mostly a sunset view, here the route itself is the point. The boat stays among islands the whole time.

Felucca ride Aswan price: booked online or on the Corniche

Feluccas wait along the Aswan Corniche and are hired per boat, not per seat. There is no official fare table, bargaining is normal and the captain wants cash: agree the price for the whole boat and the time on the water before you step aboard. Booked online, prices run from $15 to $60, with a fixed time and usually a hotel pick-up.

The classic Aswan felucca route: Elephantine and Kitchener's Island

Most sails follow the same loop: out past Elephantine Island, around Kitchener's Island with the Aswan Botanical Garden, and back along the West Bank under the Tombs of the Nobles and the Aga Khan Mausoleum on the ridge. On a light wind the captain tacks between the rocks; on a still day expect a tow by a motorboat for part of the way.

A sail around an island is not the same as landing on it. If you want to walk in the Botanical Garden or see the ruins on Elephantine, ask whether the listing stops there and whether entry is included. Kitchener's Island is not a ministry site and has no published fee, so agree it with the captain or guide. The ministry sites near the route have fixed prices:

Elephantine's archaeological site admits until 16:00 and the Tombs of the Nobles close at 16:00, so a landing has to happen in the afternoon, not at sunset. Our Aswan guide covers Philae, the High Dam and the rest of the town.

Sunset felucca ride in Aswan

The sun goes down behind the West Bank hills, which puts the dunes and tombs in silhouette from the river. Aswan's sunset follows the same seasonal swing as Luxor's: about 17:00 in December, about 19:40 in June and July, with the clocks moving on the last Friday of April and the last Thursday of October. In winter a sunset sail starts around 16:00; in midsummer, after 18:00.

Every Aswan ministry site stops admitting visitors at 15:00 (Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk) or 16:00, so the late afternoon is free for the river anyway. Two good ways to finish the evening:

  • Nubian Museum on Thursday and Friday evenings, open again 18:00 to a last entry at 20:00 (EGP 400; official page).
  • Philae sound and light show, in English on Friday and Monday at 20:00 (USD 20; show times).

Winter evenings on the water are cool, with Aswan's night lows around 10–12 °C from December to February. Take a layer.

Already on a Nile cruise? Check your programme first

Before you buy a felucca in Aswan, read your cruise itinerary. Many 4-night Luxor-to-Aswan programmes already include one on the last full day:

  • Mövenpick's Darakum: a felucca round Kitchener's Island at 15:00 on the Thursday.
  • Sonesta St George: a motorboat ride and the Botanical Garden at 14:30 on the Thursday; its 3-night Aswan start has a motorboat ride on the first afternoon.
  • Steigenberger's ships on their 4-night run: felucca and Botanical Garden on day 4, though sightseeing is charged separately when you book these ships direct.

Platform cruise listings rarely spell this out, so ask the operator. If your ship uses a motorboat rather than a sail, a private felucca at sunset is still worth the money. More on both directions in the Aswan to Luxor cruise and Luxor to Aswan.

Felucca from Aswan to Luxor, Kom Ombo or Edfu

Sailing north from Aswan, downstream with the current, is the one longer felucca trip on sale: three listings on GetYourGuide. Each sails part of the way and finishes by road:

These are new and barely tested, not a standard product. The listings don't say what you sleep on, where the toilet is or how much of the trip is towed: ask all three before paying. Gebel el-Silsila, the ancient sandstone quarry, is a classic stop for sailing boats and has its own ticket (EGP 100).

If you want several nights under sail with cabins and a proper bathroom, a dahabiya does the same stretch in the other direction: five nights from Esna to Aswan.

Felucca from Aswan to Abu Simbel?

Not possible. Abu Simbel is on Lake Nasser, above the High Dam, about 280–300 km south of Aswan and 3.5–4 hours by road. Nile boats cannot pass the dam. Go by road or air (Abu Simbel guide) or take a Lake Nasser cruise. One private two-day tour pairs Abu Simbel with an Aswan felucca ride: from $300, 4.8 from 9 reviews.

Nubian village by felucca

The Nubian village of Gharb Soheil, with its brightly painted domed houses, is reached by boat from Aswan. Feluccas go there, but the faster and more common way is a motorboat tour: the Nubian village by motorboat is rated 4.6 from 46 reviews. See day trips from Aswan.

Some tours offer a swim on the way. Don't: schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is a risk in the Nile, so no swimming, wading or bathing (TravelHealthPro).

Safety and etiquette on an Aswan felucca

  • Ask for life jackets; there is no published rule for Aswan's tourist feluccas.
  • Agree the price per boat, the route and the time before boarding, and pay at the end.
  • Carry cash in Egyptian pounds or small US dollar notes for the tip, about US$5–10 per group.
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen: the deck has little shade, and Aswan's sun is strong even in winter.

Felucca in Aswan: FAQ

How much is a felucca ride in Aswan?

Booked online, from $15 per person for two hours around Elephantine and Kitchener's Island with hotel pick-up, up to $60 on Headout. On the Corniche the price is per boat and agreed with the captain before you board. Add a tip of about US$5–10 per group.

What is the best felucca ride in Aswan?

The loop around Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island, past the Tombs of the Nobles and the Aga Khan Mausoleum. Time it for the last hour before sunset.

Can you take a felucca from Aswan to Luxor?

Only partly. A few new listings sail one to three nights north to Daraw, Kom Ombo or Gebel el-Silsila and finish by road to Luxor, from $230. They have one review or none, so ask about sleeping, toilets and towing first.

Is a sunset felucca ride in Aswan worth it if my cruise includes a boat trip?

Often yes. Ship programmes usually use the afternoon slot, and some use a motorboat rather than a sail. Check your itinerary first.

Does a felucca ride include the Botanical Garden?

Most sail around Kitchener's Island rather than landing. Ask whether the listing stops there and whether the garden's entry is included.

Can you go from Aswan to Abu Simbel by felucca?

No. Abu Simbel is on Lake Nasser, beyond the High Dam, about 3.5–4 hours by road. Go by road, by air or on a Lake Nasser cruise.
