A dahabiya Nile cruise trades the big ship's pool, lift and 100-plus fellow passengers for a wooden-style sailing houseboat with a handful of cabins and moorings at river islands instead of town quays. The classic trip is five nights from Esna to Aswan, sailing south with the north wind and stopping at El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila, two sites the cruise ships pass without stopping.

It costs two to four times more per night than a standard 5-star ship, it leaves Luxor's temples outside the cruise, and on a calm day a tug does the work the sails cannot. Below: how it works, what it costs and how to book. To choose a boat, see our ranked shortlist of the best dahabiya Nile cruises.

What is a dahabiya?

A dahabiya (also spelt dahabeya or dahabeah) is a traditional Nile sailing houseboat: a long, flat wooden-style hull with one or two tall masts, a row of cabins and a wide shaded deck on top. Modern dahabiyas are about 35–60 metres long and carry 4–12 cabins for 8–24 guests. Nour El Nil's biggest boats take 24 at most; Djed's take five or six cabins.

Most have no engine. They sail with the prevailing north wind, which blows upriver, and a small tug or motorboat tows them when the wind fails. That is why the classic itinerary runs south from Esna to Aswan, and why the downriver version, against the wind, is usually a night shorter (Djed sells 4 nights up and 3 nights down). Expect some towing on any trip; on a still day it can be most of the day.

On board you get air-conditioned cabins, meals usually served at shared tables and a sun deck with sofas and loungers. You do not get a pool (a few boats have a hot tub), a gym, a lift or reliable Wi-Fi: the connection comes from the mobile network and drops in quiet stretches of river.

Dahabiya vs Nile cruise ship: what really changes

Dahabiya Standard Nile cruise ship
Size 4–12 cabins, 8–24 guests 50–80 cabins, often 100–150 guests or more
Power Sails, with a tug on calm days Engines
Usual route Esna → Aswan, 4–5 nights Luxor ⇄ Aswan, 3–4 nights
Sailing hours By day Much of it at night or before dawn
Moorings River islands and quiet banks; last night at the Aswan bridge dock Town quays, often side by side with other ships
Extra stops El Kab, Gebel el-Silsila, villages, islands Rarely
Luxor sights Usually outside the cruise Included on day 1–2 or the last morning
Pool None (a few hot tubs) On the sun deck
Price per person per night About €330–660+ direct; $280–700 on GetYourGuide From about $150 on GetYourGuide

The mooring line matters more than it looks. At busy quays in Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan, cruise ships often tie up side by side, so your "Nile view" window may face the next ship's cabin. A dahabiya spends most nights alone at an island or a quiet bank. The exception is the final night: Nour El Nil says the government requires dahabiyas to dock beside the Aswan bridge, a mooring it calls less idyllic than the rest.

The big ships do much of their sailing between 03:00 and 06:00 or over lunch. On a dahabiya the moving river is the daytime entertainment, which is the point of going.

Is a dahabiya Nile cruise worth it?

For a second trip, a honeymoon or anyone with eight or more days in the Nile Valley, usually yes. For a first visit of a week, with children who want a pool, or on a tight budget, a good 5-star ship covers more sights for less money.

Pros

  • El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila, which big ships do not stop at
  • Quiet island moorings, no rafting at busy quays
  • Daylight sailing, with 24 guests at most on the biggest boats
  • Entry fees, guide and Luxor transfer included on Nour El Nil

Cons

  • Luxor's temples are not in the classic Esna → Aswan cruise
  • A tug tows on calm days; boats may travel in convoy
  • No pool, no lift, Wi-Fi only via the mobile network
  • Two to four times the nightly price of a standard ship

Shared dining splits opinion too: some guests love the house-party table, others want a table for two. If that is you, charter the whole boat (see below).

The dahabiya route: Esna to Aswan in five nights

The classic route starts at Esna, about 50 km south of Luxor by road. Starting there lets the boats skip the Esna lock and its winter queue, and the stretch between Luxor and Esna. The catch is that Karnak, Luxor Temple and the Valley of the Kings are not in the cruise. Plan two nights in Luxor before you board and at least one in Aswan after you leave.

This is how a nine-day trip fits around Nour El Nil's published five-night itinerary. Other operators follow a similar line with their own island stops.

Itineraries can change at a few hours' notice with river levels and the rules of the Nile authorities, so treat the island names as likely, not promised. Some programmes advertise a swim from a riverbank. Don't: UK health advice is not to swim, wade or bathe in the Nile because of schistosomiasis (bilharzia), according to TravelHealthPro.

Entry fees on the dahabiya route

Five sites sit on the Esna → Aswan run. On the official ministry prices they cost EGP 1,500 per foreign adult together (students half). Nour El Nil includes them; on any other boat or listing, check.

Dahabiya Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan, and other routes

Esna → Aswan is the classic, not the only, option.

  • Luxor → Aswan, 4 nights. Ashranda's Nuun & Nuut and Nebyt leave Luxor on Monday; Merit leaves on Saturday; JAZ's Molouky and Yakouta embark in Luxor for 5 nights. GetYourGuide's 6-Day Luxor → Aswan listing (5 nights, from $1,400) also starts there. Check whether Luxor sightseeing is inside the programme or not.
  • Aswan → Esna or Luxor, 3 nights. The downriver version against the wind: Djed's boats, Nuun & Nuut and Nebyt on Friday, Merit on Wednesday. GetYourGuide's best-reviewed dahabiya (3 nights from $1,100) sails this way.
  • 7 nights. Sonesta's Amirat sells a 7-night trip from Saturday; Nebyt (a Luxor round trip from Monday), Nuun & Nuut and Merit also sell 7 nights. Same sites, more time on the water.

Departure days differ boat by boat, so your dates effectively choose the boat. Djed's four boats leave Esna on four different days (The Orient Saturday, Nora Sunday, Zekrayaat Monday, Loulia Thursday); Nour El Nil leaves on Monday or Tuesday.

Nile dahabiya boats: who sails what

Dahabiyas are run by a few specialist fleets, hotel groups and independent owners whose boats are resold by Egyptian agencies. The brands worth knowing:

Specialist fleets

  • Nour El Nil: nine boats (Dendera, Najafa, Poppee, Roman, Adelaïde, Agatha, Meroe, Malouka, El Nil), about ten rooms each, one itinerary: five nights Esna → Aswan, southbound only, September to May. Priced per room in euros on nourelnil.com.
  • Djed: The Orient, Nora, Zekrayaat and Loulia, five or six cabins each, priced per person per night on djedegypt.com. Zekrayaat is a Djed boat, not a Nour El Nil one.
  • Lazuli: a fleet of about eight to ten dahabiyas founded in 2001 by Wally Aziz, popular with French travellers. There is no single "MS Lazuli".
  • Ashranda: Nebyt and the twins Nuun & Nuut, sold by Memphis Tours.
  • Merit: Merit 1 and 2, eight or nine cabins, with hot tubs on deck.

Hotel groups and luxury brands

  • Sonesta Amirat (and Amirat II), from the group behind Sonesta St George.
  • JAZ Molouky and Yakouta, six suites each, with published deposit terms on dahabeyat.com.
  • A&K Zein Nile Chateau, six cabins and suites for twelve guests, private charter only.
  • Mövenpick SB Feddya, four balcony suites.
  • Oberoi Melouk and Malekat, two seven-suite dahabiyas announced for late 2026 (Egyptian Streets); check they are sailing before you plan around them.

Smaller independents sold by agencies include Amoura (six doubles and a terrace suite), Abundance (four cabins and a balcony suite on a 35 m hull) and Eyaru (with two 25 m² family suites). Their owners are not published; ask the seller who runs the boat.

The ships Every ship and dahabiya we review, with who runs it and where it sails.

Lazuli dahabiyasLazuli (founded 2001 by Wally Aziz)Dahabiya5–10 cabins per boat, 10–20 guestsEsna or Luxor → Aswan, 4–7 nights

Three names cause most of the confusion. Nebu is a 40-suite luxury motor ship with a pool, not a dahabiya; Nebyt is the dahabiya. Lazuli's L'Orient and Djed's The Orient are different boats. And Cairo's "Nile Dahabiya" is a two-hour dinner boat, not a cruise (see the FAQ).

Dahabiya Nile cruise price: what you really pay

A dahabiya costs roughly €330 to €660 or more per person per night when booked direct, against about $150 a night at the bottom of the big-ship market. The trap is that operators quote on three different bases, so compare per person per night before anything else.

The Nour El Nil figures are its own live prices for late-October departures in high season; its biggest rooms, the four-berth Deluxe Suites, reach €16,300 per cruise. Lazuli is reported at from about €2,500 per person; ask an agent for dates and what that covers. On GetYourGuide, the 5-night Luxor → Aswan listing works out cheapest per night (from $1,400, about $280), but it is rated 4.1 from nine reviews, against 4.8 from 58 for the 3-night trip.

What the price includes, and what it doesn't

Nour El Nil's rate includes the transfer from your Luxor hotel or airport to Esna, the entry fees, a guide, meals and taxes. Alcohol and the transfer to Aswan airport are extra. That is the most complete published package; with other boats, read the inclusions line by line.

Budget on top for:

  • Entry fees if excluded: EGP 1,500 per adult for the five sites on the route, plus your Luxor and Aswan sightseeing outside the cruise (prices of Nile cruises has the full list).
  • Tips: there is no official rule. Agencies' general guidance for Nile cruises is US$5–10 per person per night for the crew plus US$10–15 per person per day for the guide. Nour El Nil publishes no figure, so ask when you request the booking.
  • Drinks: alcohol is extra on the boats that publish their inclusions.
  • Hotel nights in Luxor before and Aswan after, and any Abu Simbel trip.
  • New Year's Eve: many Nile boats charge a compulsory gala supplement; ask before you book festive dates.

Private dahabiya and luxury small-boat Nile cruises

With six cabins, a dahabiya is small enough for one family or a group of friends to take every room. Some boats are sold only that way: A&K's Zein Nile Chateau (six cabins and suites, including the 108 m² Farouk suite, plus a plunge pool) is a private charter with a bespoke route and rates on request, and it takes children of any age. Mövenpick's SB Feddya sails tailor-made 4–7 night trips between Luxor and Aswan. Elsewhere, ask the operator for a whole-boat price: on a boat like Nebyt, which sails only when at least two or three cabins are booked, filling it yourself also guarantees the departure.

If you want a small boat but also Luxor's sights inside the cruise, and perhaps a pool (both Oberoi ships have one), look at the small luxury ships instead. They have engines and sail Luxor ⇄ Aswan with far fewer guests than standard ships: the Oberoi Philae has 22 cabins of about 36 m², the 1921 paddle steamer SS Sudan 24 cabins and suites, the Oberoi Zahra 28, A&K's Nile Seray (new from November 2026) 32 suites and Sonesta's Star Goddess 33. A&K and Oberoi also use private docks, away from the rafting at public quays. They are not cheaper than a dahabiya: A&K publishes $3,235 per person for 4 nights on Sun Boat IV in October–November. Compare them in luxury Nile cruises.

Best time for a dahabiya Nile cruise

October to April. The days are warm and the evenings on deck pleasant, though December to February nights drop to 7–12 °C, so pack a fleece. Nour El Nil sails only from September to May. Djed and the Memphis Tours dahabiyas publish summer prices, and Sonesta's Amirat is sold all year, but from June to August afternoons reach around 41 °C and there is no pool to retreat to.

Summer is cheaper where boats do sail: Memphis Tours prices Nebyt lowest from May to August. Also:

  • Low water in December–January: the winter canal-cleaning closure lowers the river. Itineraries can be adjusted, and on a dahabiya that may mean a different mooring or more towing.
  • Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks, with festive supplements on many boats.

More in the best time to cruise the Nile.

Booking a dahabiya Nile cruise

Book direct with the operator (Nour El Nil, Djed, JAZ), through a UK or US agency (Scott Dunn and i-escape sell Nour El Nil; Jacada and Flee Winter sell Lazuli), through an Egyptian agency such as Memphis Tours, or on GetYourGuide.

GetYourGuide sells a handful of dahabiya cruises run by Egyptian agencies, and none names the boat. That is fine if you want the format more than a brand, but ask the operator for the boat's name, the cabin type and the list of included entry fees before you pay. Most GetYourGuide bookings can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead; multi-day cruises may differ, so check the listing.

Booking a dahabiya without surprises

  1. Convert every quote to per person per night: per room, per person and per trip are not the same thing.
  2. Check the departure day against your flights, and book Luxor nights before and Aswan nights after.
  3. Ask whether the departure is guaranteed: some boats sail only with a minimum number of cabins booked.
  4. Read the deposit terms: Nour El Nil asks 25 % within 14 days of confirmation; Memphis Tours 50 % on Nuun & Nuut; JAZ charges 100 % if you cancel within 45 days.
  5. Get the inclusions in writing: entry fees, guide, transfers to Esna and from Aswan, soft drinks.
  6. On GetYourGuide, ask for the boat's name and cabin before paying.

FAQ

What is a dahabiya Nile cruise?

A trip of usually 3–5 nights on a traditional sailing houseboat with 4–12 cabins, most often from Esna to Aswan. Boats sail by day with the north wind, use a tug when it drops, and stop at El Kab and Gebel el-Silsila, which big cruise ships skip.

How much is a dahabiya Nile cruise?

About €330 per person per night at Djed, about €660 per person per night on Nour El Nil (priced per room), and around US$390–480 a night through Egyptian agencies. On GetYourGuide, 3 nights start at $1,100 per person.

Is there a dahabiya Nile cruise with a pool?

Not really. Dahabiyas have no pools; Merit and Lazuli's Lotus have hot tubs on deck, and A&K's private-charter Zein Nile Chateau has a plunge pool. If a pool matters, look at small luxury ships such as the Oberoi Philae.

Can you do a dahabiya Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan?

Yes. Nuun & Nuut and Nebyt leave Luxor on Monday, Merit on Saturday, and JAZ's dahabiyas also embark in Luxor. Nour El Nil starts at Esna but collects you from your Luxor hotel or the airport.

Is there a dahabiya cruise from Cairo?

Not as a multi-day trip on the platforms. In Cairo, "Nile Dahabiya" is a two-hour open-air dinner boat with a live band (from $34 on Headout). For dinner cruises see Cairo dinner cruises. The long river cruise from Cairo to Aswan, on Mövenpick's Darakum, is a ship, not a dahabiya.

Are dahabiya Nile cruises suitable for children?

For older children who like a slow pace. Nour El Nil charges children as adults; its Najafa, Poppee, Roman and Adelaïde have Deluxe Suites sleeping four. Never let children swim in the Nile. More in Nile cruises with kids.
