A Viking Nile river cruise is the most complete packaged Egypt trip sold by a Western river line: new ships of one design, three nights in Cairo with the Grand Egyptian Museum, and an eight-night river loop that adds Dendera and Esna to the usual temples. Our verdict: excellent if you want everything arranged and can pay for it, but you are paying for the package, not for a better river.

  • Fares are quoted in US dollars; check viking.co.uk for sterling
  • No Lake Nasser or Abu Simbel sailing in the current programme

Viking's Nile ships: 12 listed, one design

Viking lists 12 Nile ships, all owned and operated by Viking itself. That is unusual on a river where most foreign brands charter or partner with Egyptian-owned ships.

  • Eight identical sisters already sailing: Viking Osiris (2022), Aton (2023), Hathor and Sobek (2024), Amun and Thoth (2025), Ptah and Sekhmet (2026).
  • Two more listed for 2027: Viking Geb and Viking Anubis, the same design.
  • Viking Ra, an older ship refurbished in 2017: 52 guests, all suites, with a pool and two Jacuzzis. It is not a new ship despite the god's name, and there is no "Ra II".
  • MS Antares, refurbished in 2018: 62 guests, every stateroom with a French balcony, and a pool.

Each new sister carries 82 guests and 48 crew in 41 outside staterooms: 12 Standard Staterooms, 21 Veranda Staterooms, 6 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites. There is a pool on the sun deck. The Standard Staterooms have no veranda, so if a balcony matters, book a Veranda Stateroom or above.

Because the new-builds are identical, the ship's name on your booking matters less than the cabin category. Reviews of Viking Osiris, Viking Sobek or Viking Aton describe the same layout. Which ship you sail depends on your departure date. For comparison, a standard Egyptian five-star ship carries 100–150 or more guests.

Viking Nile cruise itinerary: Pharaohs & Pyramids

The main product is Pharaohs & Pyramids, 12 days round trip from Cairo. You spend three nights in Cairo, fly to Luxor, then spend eight nights on a Viking ship on a round trip from Luxor.

Pharaohs & Pyramids, 12 days Cairo–Cairo (order as published by Viking)
  1. Cairo · 3 nights

    Cairo

Saqqara, the Citadel, Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

    Hotel

  2. Flight

    Luxor

Fly to Luxor and board the ship; Luxor and Karnak.

    Ship moored in Luxor

  3. On board

    Dendera

Qena, for the Temple of Hathor at Dendera.

North of Luxor, a stretch short cruises never sail

  4. On board

    Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari).

    Luxor's West Bank

  5. On board

    Esna

    Temple of Khnum at Esna.

    Esna lock

  6. On board

    Aswan

High Dam, the souq and a felucca; a Nubian village, Philae and a papyrus visit.

    Aswan, the southern turning point

  7. On board

    Kom Ombo

    Kom Ombo temple.

    Sailing north

  8. On board

    Edfu

    Temple of Horus at Edfu.

Back to Luxor; fly to Cairo for departure

Two stops set this apart from a standard 3- or 4-night Luxor–Aswan cruise. Dendera is north of Luxor, so short cruises never reach it by water. Esna is where many ships moor overnight for the lock without visiting the temple. Viking includes both. With eight nights instead of three or four, the pace is also slower.

Viking also sells extensions: two extra nights in Cairo beforehand from $799, Jordan afterwards from $2,799 and Alexandria from $999 (US fares as published).

For how the standard route compares day by day, see Luxor and Aswan Nile cruise and 7-night Nile cruise.

Viking Nile cruise price and what's included

Pharaohs & Pyramids costs from $6,999 per person (US fare, cruise-tour, two sharing). That is Viking's US fare; for a sterling price check viking.co.uk or ask a UK travel agent.

Viking's "Inclusive Value" list for the trip covers:

  • one shore excursion in every port
  • all meals on board
  • beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
  • Wi-Fi
  • port taxes
  • ground transfers when you buy Viking Air

Included drinks with meals are a real difference: most Egyptian-run ships charge for drinks separately. The inclusion list does not mention gratuities, so ask Viking or your agent. Budget for drinks outside mealtimes, optional excursions and anything not listed above.

How does it compare with the platforms? A 6-day all-inclusive Cairo and Nile cruise package on GetYourGuide costs from $1,700 (4.8 from 56 reviews). An 8-day Cairo, Luxor and Aswan tour with a cruise costs from $2,077. Neither names the ship: the operator assigns a "5-star ship or similar" with more guests, and your temple list will be the standard one without Dendera and Esna. The Viking premium buys a known new ship, a longer river programme and a Western company handling the whole trip.

Grand Nile Journey and the eclipse sailing

Viking has two newer programmes on top of Pharaohs & Pyramids:

  • Grand Nile Journey I and II, 19 days round trip from Cairo, from $14,999, departing from 2028 on Viking Ra. This one sails the river between Cairo and Aswan, with stops such as Saqqara, Meidum, Giza, Holy Family sites and Abydos. It is one of very few ways to sail the Cairo stretch at all.
  • Total Eclipse on the Nile, 12 days from $10,999, built around the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. The greatest eclipse is about 60 km east of Luxor, with more than six minutes of totality near Luxor.

The eclipse premium ($10,999 against $6,999) is for the event, not the season. Early August in Luxor means average highs of about 41 °C, so expect to see the eclipse in serious heat. See when to go.

Viking Nile cruise reviews: what to check before you book

Whatever you read in guest reviews, these are the points that decide whether a Viking departure suits you:

  • Cabin category. Twelve Standard Staterooms per new ship have no veranda. If you are paying from $6,999, decide whether a veranda matters before you pick the cheapest grade.
  • Which ship. On the identical sisters it makes little difference. Viking Ra and MS Antares are different, older ships, refurbished in 2017 and 2018, so check which one a departure uses.
  • What "one excursion per port" covers. Extra tombs in the Valley of the Kings, such as Tutankhamun (EGP 700) or Seti I (EGP 2,000), are separate tickets at the site. Ask whether they are in your programme.
  • Abu Simbel. The current programme has no Lake Nasser sailing. If you want Abu Simbel, ask Viking whether it can be added; otherwise it is a separate trip from Aswan. See Abu Simbel.
  • Gratuities. Viking's inclusion list doesn't mention them: ask.

How to book a Viking Nile cruise

Viking does not sell its Nile ships as a cruise on its own. You book the full cruise-tour (Cairo hotel, flights and ship) on Viking's national websites or through a travel agent. No Viking product is sold on GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets, and no platform listing puts you on a Viking ship, whatever the photos look like.

Booking Viking without surprises

  1. Pick the programme first: Pharaohs & Pyramids (12 days), Grand Nile Journey (19 days) or the eclipse sailing.
  2. Check the fare in your own currency on your national Viking site or with an agent.
  3. Choose a Veranda Stateroom or above if you want a balcony.
  4. Ask which ship the departure uses: one of the new sisters, Viking Ra or MS Antares.
  5. Ask what is included for tips, extra tombs and Abu Simbel.

Royal Viking is not Viking

There is an Egyptian ship called MS Royal Viking, built in 2009, which sails Luxor on Monday and Aswan on Friday and is sold by Egyptian agencies at a fraction of Viking's price. It has nothing to do with Viking River Cruises. If an agency offers you a "Royal Viking Nile cruise", you are booking that independent ship, not a Viking package. Details: Royal ships on the Nile.
