Budget Nile cruise: the cheap cruises actually worth booking

The cheapest Nile cruise worth booking is 3 nights from Aswan to Luxor from $450 per person, about $150 a night. Agency-sold budget ships cost about the same with entry fees included. Skip the one-night "overnight" and the weakly rated listings, and budget for fees and tips.

A cheap Nile cruise is easy to find: the hard part is finding one that is cheap after the extras. The best budget Nile cruise for most people is the plain 3-night Aswan → Luxor sailing, from $450 per person on GetYourGuide with a guide and hundreds of reviews behind it. A handful of agency-sold ships match that price and include the entry fees. Below are the cheapest options worth your money, the ones to avoid, and what to add to the headline price.

Cheap Nile cruises: the short answer

  • Cheapest listing with a track record: From Aswan: 4-Day Nile Cruise with Guide, 3 nights, from $450 (4.3 from 654 reviews). That is about $150 a night.
  • Cheapest named ships: Nile Shams and Semiramis III, from $406 for 3 summer nights through Egyptian agencies.
  • Biggest trap: entry fees and tips. On their own they can add a third or more to the cheapest fares, before drinks.

The full price picture, from budget to luxury, is in our guide to Nile cruise prices.

The cheapest Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor

The budget end of the Nile is the 3-night downstream cruise, Aswan → Luxor. Platforms call it "4-Day" because it runs over four calendar days. It is the same ship and the same temples as the 4-night Luxor → Aswan run, just faster: Kom Ombo and Edfu share one day, and on some ships Karnak and Luxor Temple come on the last morning after check-out. Our Aswan to Luxor guide has the day-by-day.

The best budget Nile cruise listings

1

Lowest price with plenty of reviews

From $450 with full board and a guide. The listing doesn't name the ship ("5-star ship or similar"), so ask the operator for its name and the entry-fee list right after booking.

2

Want the balloon cheaply

From $550 for 3 nights including a Luxor balloon flight, rated 4.5 from 168 reviews.

3

Abu Simbel and balloon in one booking

From $580 with both extras; the best-reviewed bundle at 4.5 from 555 reviews.

The Headout cruise at $325 is cheaper still, and it is the only listing whose title promises the entrance fees. It has no reviews yet and excludes a tipping kitty of about US$45. Worth watching; not yet the safe choice.

If you want the Abu Simbel and balloon bundle, GetYourGuide is cheaper than Headout today. Ship, cabin and inclusions may differ between listings:

Budget Nile cruise ships sold by agencies

If you would rather know the ship's name before you pay, these are the cheapest named ships we found, sold through Egyptian agencies. Prices are per person, in US dollars, for the whole cruise, with the summer (May–August) fare first:

Ship 3 nights 4 nights Departures Notes
Nile Shams $406 / $616 $455 / $685 Luxor Monday, Aswan Friday One of the cheapest ships listed; entry fees included
Semiramis III $406 / $586 $455 / $645 Luxor Thursday, Aswan Monday Entry fees included; smaller cabins (19 m²) than its sisters
Royal Viking $436 / $646 $495 / $725 Luxor Monday, Aswan Friday Entry fees included; no connection with Viking River Cruises
Chateau Lafayette $479 / $719 $599 / $919 Luxor Monday, Aswan Friday Triple-share, June–August vs October–April ($499 / $619 in May and September); entry fees included

All four fares include full board, transfers, a guide and the entry fees for the standard sites; drinks, tips and optional tours are extra, and Christmas, New Year and Easter are priced separately (ask for those dates). The winter column runs from September to April. Two other ships sit at the budget end too: Hapi V, sold "from $150 per person per night" in tailor-made trips, and King Tut I, offered by one agency at €535.90 for five days from Luxor to Aswan.

The cheapest cabins are usually on the lowest deck. On Mövenpick's Hamees, for example, the lower-deck Classic cabins have portholes only. At busy moorings ships tie up side by side, so even a "Nile view" cabin may look straight at the next ship.

Here is where budget ships sit against the rest of the market, per person per night:

What a night on the Nile costs, by type of boat
  • Budget 5-star shipAgency packages with guide and usually entry fees, summer to winter: Semiramis III 4 nights $455–645, Nile Shams 3 nights $406–616, Royal Viking 3 nights $436–646; GetYourGuide's plain 3-night Aswan→Luxor from $450USD 114–215

Typical per-person prices per night in a double cabin, full board, checked on 19 October 2026; Christmas, New Year and Easter cost more.

What a cheap Nile cruise doesn't include

The price of a budget cruise is only the start. Before you compare two offers, add these:

  • Entry fees, if the listing doesn't include them: EGP 4,060 per adult for the eight sites of a standard cruise (Karnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk). Students pay half and children under 6 go free. Official prices are on https://egymonuments.com/locations.
  • Tips: agencies suggest roughly US$5–10 per person per night for the crew and US$10–15 per person per day for the guide. The ship usually tells you its suggested figure on the first evening.
  • Drinks: extra unless the package says otherwise, including bottled water.
  • Optional tours: Abu Simbel, the balloon, Tutankhamun's tomb (EGP 700), a felucca.
  • Festive supplements: many ships charge a compulsory New Year's Eve gala dinner, which agencies put at roughly US$50–180 per person.

For two people on the $450 listing, the fare is $900. With entry fees excluded, add EGP 8,120, plus roughly $90–180 in tips for three nights. A $455 agency cruise that includes the fees can end up cheaper than a $450 listing that doesn't.

Cheap Nile cruise holidays: when to go

Summer is the cheapest time to sail. Agency fares for budget ships are much lower in May–August: Nile Shams costs $406 for 3 nights instead of $616, Semiramis III $455 for 4 nights instead of $645. The price is the heat: Luxor and Aswan average 39–42 °C by day, and sightseeing starts at 06:00–07:30 to beat it.

Not every ship sails in summer. Mayfair Cruises, Nour El Nil and Mövenpick's Royal Lily, Royal Lotus and Sun Ray stop in June–August. Mövenpick's Hamees and the JAZ ships keep sailing all year, as do the cheap agency ships above. Mayfair Cruises, which publishes its own rates, charges its lowest price ($230 per person per night with entry fees included) in September and May, when it is still hot but the ships are sailing. Our when to go guide has the month-by-month weather.

Cheap Nile cruise and stay holidays

A package with flights from the UK costs more than a platform cruise, but not always by much once you add flights yourself. The cheapest seen is TUI's 7-night all-inclusive Luxor round trip with flights from Gatwick or Manchester, launched from £1,499 per person; its cruise & stay version adds a hotel stay in Luxor or Hurghada. Note that TUI includes only the Edfu and Kom Ombo excursions, so the other sites are extra.

The do-it-yourself version lets you hunt for the cheapest flight and the cheapest cruise separately: a seasonal easyJet (Gatwick) or TUI (Gatwick, Manchester) flight to Luxor, and a 3- or 4-night cruise booked on a platform. If your cruise starts in Aswan, the train from Luxor takes about 3–3.5 hours. From a beach holiday in Hurghada, packages drive about four hours to Luxor to join a ship. No cruise sails from the Red Sea.

  1. 0 kmLuxorStart or end of every standard cruise. Ships moor along the East Bank and at private docks south of town; Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank are visited from here.
  2. 50 kmEsnaAbout 50 km upriver. Ships pass the Esna lock (two ships per lockage), often at night; many ships stop here overnight without visiting the temple.
  3. EdfuBetween Esna and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus is visited by horse carriage or coach from the quay, usually in the morning.
  4. Kom OmboRiverside temple, open for entry until 20:00: upstream ships stop at dusk, downstream ships come early in the morning.
  5. 200 kmAswanAbout 200 km by river from Luxor. Philae, the High Dam and a felucca or motorboat round Kitchener's Island; last night of a dahabiya trip at the Aswan bridge dock.

Cheap Nile cruises to avoid

  • The one-night "overnight" to Luxor ($550). One night aboard costs more than three nights on the cheapest listing.
  • Two-night "3-Day" cruises ($590 for the plain version). They put you on a ship partway through its run, at almost double the price per night.
  • Weakly rated short Luxor cruises. One Luxor 3-Day listing with a balloon is rated 2.3 from 10 reviews, and a 3-night Luxor cruise with a balloon is rated 3.8. Check the rating and the number of reviews, not just the price.
  • The cheapest 7-night listings. They have very few reviews. If you want a week on board, a ship that publishes its own 7-night round trip is a safer buy.

More on comparing listings is in our guide to the booking platforms.

Is a budget Nile cruise worth it?

Yes, for most first-time visitors. Standard Luxor–Aswan cruises visit the same core temples whatever the price, and the cheap packages include a guide. What you give up is choice of ship, cabin and departure day, and you may share the temples with bigger groups.

Pay more when it buys something specific: four nights instead of three (the 4-night guide explains the extra Aswan afternoon), a ship with published rates and fees included, or a small boat. Our best Nile cruises page weighs those options.

Budget Nile cruises: questions

What is the cheapest Nile cruise?

The cheapest with a solid review record is the 3-night Aswan → Luxor cruise from $450 per person on GetYourGuide (4.3 from 654 reviews). Agency-sold Nile Shams and Semiramis III cost $406 for 3 nights in summer. A Headout listing at $325 includes entrance fees but has no reviews yet.

How much is a budget Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor?

About $400–600 per person for 3 nights, or roughly $135–200 a night, plus tips and, if the listing excludes them, entry fees of EGP 4,060 per adult.

Are cheap Nile cruises all inclusive?

They include full board, a guide and transfers. Drinks are extra, and entry fees vary: most Egyptian agency packages include them, most platform listings don't say. Check the "includes" list.

When are Nile cruises cheapest?

June to August. Nile Shams, for example, costs $406 for 3 nights in summer against $616 in winter, but daytime temperatures in Luxor and Aswan average 39–42 °C and some ships don't sail.

Are cheap Nile cruises safe?

The Nile valley between Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel is outside the UK Foreign Office's warning areas. The FCDO does note accidents on Nile cruises linked to overcrowding and poor safety standards, so book a ship you can name and an operator with reviews.

Is a cheap Nile cruise worth it?

For a first visit, usually yes: the temples are the same on every ship. Spend extra only on things you'll notice, such as a fourth night, entry fees included or a smaller boat.
