A felucca is the traditional wooden Nile sailing boat: one tall, slanting (lateen) sail and a captain at the tiller. A felucca ride in Cairo is the cheapest and quietest way onto the river in the capital. You hire the whole boat for an hour or two, sail past the city's towers and bridges, and step off where you started.

Whether it turns out to be a highlight or a non-event depends on three things: the hour you go, the stretch of river you sail and whether the price you agreed covers the whole boat.

What you book: a private boat, not a seat

In Cairo a felucca is hired as a whole boat, and every well-reviewed listing on the platforms is private: your group has the boat and the captain to itself. So compare like with like. GetYourGuide shows a "from" price per person, while Headout prices its private felucca per group, so enter your real group size before deciding which is cheaper.

A real felucca has no engine. When the wind drops, boats are towed by a small motorboat or switch to an auxiliary motor, so a full sail on a calm evening is never guaranteed. For the rest of the river, see the felucca guide.

Felucca ride Cairo price and cost

Pre-booked private rides cost from about $14 to $25 for one to two hours. The safe default is the two-hour private felucca ride on GetYourGuide, from $15 with 4.4 from 928 reviews. Headout's private ride with hotel transfers (from $24 per group, 4.7) adds pick-up and drop-off, the captain and bottled water, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Tiqets private sailboat from Qasr el-Nil is one hour from $15 and offers a night option, but has a single review so far.

Dinner and drinks versions cost from $38 to $46 (see below). The weakest Cairo listing is a felucca ride with meals rated 3.8; the private dinner felucca is the better buy for a few dollars more.

On the riverbank you can simply walk up and hire a boat. Feluccas are hired per boat by the hour: agree the price, the length of the sail and whether the tip is included before anyone casts off, and pay in cash in Egyptian pounds (EGP).

Where to take a felucca in Cairo

Boats wait in four main places, and the stretch of river matters more than the boat.

  • Downtown and Garden City Corniche (the riverside road), by the Four Seasons Nile Plaza and Qasr el-Nil Bridge. The busiest start and the best skyline: you sail past Cairo Tower and the tip of Gezira island.
  • Zamalek, the island in the middle of the river. Convenient if you are staying there, with the same central views.
  • Maadi Corniche, further south. Quieter and greener, but further from the sights.
  • Giza bank (the west bank around Dokki). Handy after the pyramids or before a dinner boat on Nile Street.

On pre-booked rides the boarding point is on your voucher; Headout's listing, for example, names no dock. Some riverside hotels, including the Four Seasons Nile Plaza, sell their own felucca ride, so ask the concierge if you would rather board at the hotel.

Sunset felucca in Cairo: what time to go

The light is best in the hour before sunset, and sunset moves by about three hours across the year. Egypt also changes its clocks: summer time runs from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October, so sunset jumps an hour later in late April and an hour earlier at the end of October.

Month Sunset in Cairo (about) Board around
November–January 17:00–17:15 15:30–16:00
February–March 17:45–18:05 16:15–16:45
April (before the clock change) 18:20 17:00
May–August 19:40–20:00 18:15–18:30
September 19:00 17:30
October (before the clock change) 18:25 17:00

Start 60–90 minutes before sunset so you are mid-river when the sky turns. A listing that promises a "17:00 sunset sail" is right only in winter. Winter evenings on the water are cool (Cairo's average January low is about 10 °C), so bring a layer.

Dinner felucca vs a Cairo dinner cruise

Two GetYourGuide listings turn the felucca into an evening out. The private felucca with dinner and drinks (from $46, 4.8 from 475 reviews) serves a meal and hot and cold soft drinks for two hours, with your own waiter. The unlimited-drinks version (from $38, 4.9) drops the meal and keeps the soft drinks and fresh juices coming.

The big dinner boats are a different night out. The Nile Maxim boards in Zamalek, seats up to 240 on one level and puts on a tanoura (whirling dervish) and belly-dance show, from $70 on Headout (that listing is priced per group). The Nile Crystal in Maadi serves an open buffet with a sunset sitting around 18:00, from $27 on Tiqets. Drinks, even water, cost extra on the big boats.

So the dinner felucca is not automatically the budget choice: it costs more than a Nile Crystal seat and less than the Maxim. You pay for privacy: no show, no alcohol, the whole boat to yourselves. For music and a show, read the Cairo dinner cruise guide; for a quiet evening, take the felucca.

Felucca tour in Cairo with the pyramids

Many day tours finish with an hour on a felucca, a good way to cool down after Giza. The pyramids and Sphinx tour with a felucca ride starts from $59 (4.7 from 213 reviews); Headout's half-day Giza tour with a felucca and transfers from $54 has the most reviews (905, rated 4.2). For a longer day, Saqqara and Memphis, with optional Dahshur and a felucca is from $55 and rated 4.8.

Check whether entry tickets are included. The Giza plateau costs EGP 700 for a foreign adult, with the pyramid interiors on separate tickets (official ticket shop). On these tours the felucca is the last hour of the day, so whether you catch the sunset depends on how long the guide spends at the sites. For the rest of the capital, see things to do in Cairo.

Walking up suits you if you are staying by the river and don't mind bargaining. Book ahead for a fixed sunset slot, a dinner felucca or hotel transfers. The platform guide explains how the three booking sites handle cancellations and refunds.

Before you step aboard

  1. Agree the price for the whole boat and how many hours it covers.
  2. Ask for life jackets and check they are on board.
  3. Confirm whether drinks, food or the tip are included.
  4. Ask what happens if there is no wind: towing or a motor is normal.
  5. Carry small notes for the captain's tip.

Safety, tipping and etiquette

Cairo lies outside the areas covered by the UK government's travel warnings, but the FCDO safety page notes that overcrowding and poor safety standards have caused accidents on Nile cruises. On a felucca that means a sensible number of people for the boat and life jackets on board.

Don't swim from the boat or trail your feet in the water: the Nile carries schistosomiasis (bilharzia), and TravelHealthPro advises against swimming, wading or bathing in fresh water in Egypt.

Alcohol is banned on Headout's private felucca, and the GetYourGuide drinks listings serve soft drinks and juices. Tip the captain about US$5–10 per group at the end. Feluccas on the bank are paid in cash.

Cairo felucca vs Luxor and Aswan

Cairo's felucca is about the city: towers, bridges and the traffic fading behind you. Aswan has the best felucca water on the Nile, with granite islands and Kitchener's Island, and a felucca in Aswan is often already part of a 4-night cruise. In Luxor the sun sets behind the Theban hills (Luxor sunset felucca).

If you can do only one, make it Aswan. If Cairo is the only Nile you will see, a private sunset sail from the downtown Corniche is two hours well spent. Heading south afterwards? See Nile cruises from Cairo.

Felucca ride in Cairo: questions

How much is a felucca ride in Cairo?

Pre-booked private rides cost from about $14–25 for one to two hours; dinner or drinks versions from $38–46. On the riverbank you pay per boat by the hour, in cash: agree the price and length before you board.

Where do you take a felucca ride in Cairo?

From the downtown and Garden City Corniche by Qasr el-Nil Bridge, from Zamalek, from the Maadi Corniche and from the Giza bank. Downtown has the best skyline; Maadi is quieter.

What time is a sunset felucca in Cairo?

Sunset is about 17:00 from November to January and close to 20:00 in June and July. Board 60–90 minutes earlier.

Can you take a felucca from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan?

No. Cairo feluccas are short sails of one to three hours. The river cruise between Cairo and Aswan is a long trip of 12–14 nights on one Mövenpick ship, sailing only part of the year; most visitors fly to Luxor or Aswan and join a cruise there.

Is a felucca ride in Cairo worth it?

Yes, if you book a private boat for the hour before sunset. It is the cheapest way onto the Nile in Cairo and far quieter than a dinner boat. In a flat calm the boat may be towed.

Can you drink alcohol on a felucca in Cairo?

Not on the main platform listings: Headout's private felucca bans alcohol, and the GetYourGuide dinner and drinks feluccas serve soft drinks and juices.
