For most families the best Nile cruise is 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan on a ship with a shallow pool, sailed between October and April. Sonesta lets one under-6 sail free; A&K, SS Sudan and Nour El Nil set age limits or charge children in full.

A family Nile cruise is one of the easiest ways to show children ancient Egypt: you unpack once, the ship moves between the temples, and there is a pool on the roof for the hot hours. It is not a resort holiday: days start early, the sites are big and shadeless, and you should not expect a kids' club. With the right length, months and ship rules, it works well from about six upwards.

Is a Nile cruise with kids a good idea?

Yes, if you keep it short and cool. Most ships sell two halves of the same weekly loop: 3 nights from Aswan to Luxor or 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan (see Luxor to Aswan and Aswan to Luxor). Both visit the same temples, but the 3-night version squeezes Kom Ombo and Edfu into one day and often does Karnak after check-out.

For children, the 4-night trip from Luxor is the better buy. Kom Ombo is visited at about 18:30, when the stone has cooled, and the last full day ends with a sail to the Botanical Garden on Kitchener's Island rather than another temple. Seven nights repeats the same stops as "free time": pool days for toddlers, poor value for teenagers. On platform listings, "4-Day" means 3 nights and "5-Day" means 4.

Best Nile cruise for families: the shortlist

Sonesta (Moon Goddess and St George). The most family-friendly published child rates on the river (see the table below), and both ships have a sun-deck pool with a shallow-water extension. Sonesta sails weekly all year, Luxor on Monday and Aswan on Friday. The catch: a direct booking on sonesta.com is cabin and full board only ("sightseeing activities are not included in the rates"), so add a guide and tickets. Reviews: Moon Goddess, St George.

A&K Sanctuary, for older children. Entry fees and guided visits are included, which removes the per-child ticket maths; flights and transfers are not. A&K publishes a separate child rate in its rate table. See A&K Sanctuary.

A platform cruise, for budget and flexibility. GetYourGuide's 3-night Aswan to Luxor listings start from $450 per person, on "a 5-star ship or similar". Ask the operator before you pay about a child reduction and a triple cabin.

A dahabiya, for a family that books the whole boat. On Nour El Nil, children are charged as adults, but prices are per room: a Najafa Deluxe Suite sleeping four costs €16,300 for 5 nights in high season. More in best dahabiya.

TUI River Cruises is an adults-only brand: check before you look at its Nile ships.

Child prices and age limits on Nile cruises

Ship or operator Children
Sonesta (all ships) Under 6 free sharing; 6–11 half price sharing (one child each); 12+ adult rate
A&K Sun Boat IV, Nile Adventurer, Sun Boat III From age 10; under-15s share with an adult
A&K Nile Seray From age 6; 15 and under share with an adult
A&K Zein Nile Chateau (dahabiya) Any age; private charter only
SS Sudan No children under 6
Nour El Nil dahabiyas Charged as adults; no extra beds or cots
GetYourGuide and Headout cruises One per-person price; ask the operator

For any other ship, ask the seller for its child policy in writing. Egyptian agencies often quote a triple-share price per person (Chateau Lafayette from $479 for 3 nights in summer, for example).

Nile cruise family rooms and cabins

Most cabins are doubles, so a family of four usually takes two neighbouring cabins or a suite. Family rooms are rare: Sonesta Sun Goddess lists two Family suites, Le Fayan's brochure one Family Suite of 32 m², the Oberoi Zahra a two-bedroom suite for four, and Nour El Nil has four-berth Deluxe Suites with two bathrooms only on Najafa, Poppee, Roman and Adelaïde (no extra beds or cots).

Don't pay much extra for a balcony: at busy quays ships often tie up side by side, so your window may face the next ship, and with toddlers a sealed window is calmer anyway.

Entry fees for children

At ministry sites, children under 6 enter free. From 6 there is no child ticket, only a half-price student rate needing a valid student ID (age 24 or under), so bring a student card if your child has one.

The eight sites of a standard cruise cost EGP 4,060 per foreign adult. Two adults with children of 7 and 10 pay EGP 16,240 if the package excludes tickets, or EGP 12,180 if both children have student cards. Most GetYourGuide listings don't say, so check "includes". Headout's 3-night cruise with entrance fees (from $325, no reviews yet) is the only platform cruise that promises them, and it excludes a tipping kitty of about US$45.

Nile cruise with a toddler

It can be done. Sonesta's under-6 rule makes a toddler free, and a shallow pool matters more than any spa. Lifts are not universal: Sonesta Nile Goddess and Royal Esadora have one, while one blog review notes that the Mayfair has none. Temples mean sand, steps and uneven stone, so a baby carrier beats a pushchair. The 07:30 tours suit toddler rhythms, the midday sailing is nap time, and one parent can always stay on board for the High Dam stop.

Abu Simbel and the balloon with kids

Abu Simbel is about 280–300 km south of Aswan, 3.5 to 4 hours each way by road, with pre-dawn departures (EGP 822 per adult, under-6s free). With under-8s, consider the short flight from Aswan (about 45 minutes; check the airline) or leave it out. Details in Abu Simbel from Aswan.

The Luxor balloon picks up about 05:00–05:30 in winter and 04:30–05:00 in summer. Pregnant women may not fly (Sindbad's rule); check the listing for a minimum age. Fly on your first Luxor morning so a weather cancellation can move to the next dawn, and bring fleeces: a January dawn can be 7 °C.

Best time for a family Nile cruise

October to April is the season. Mid-February half-term is the coolest and busiest; October half-term is warm (Luxor's average October maximum is about 35 °C); Easter falls in the spring shoulder. Over New Year many ships add a compulsory gala supplement (agencies quote roughly US$50–180 per person): ask whether children pay it. July and August are cheapest, but bring 41 °C heat and fewer ships. More in when to go.

Family Nile cruise: questions

What is the best Nile cruise for families?

Usually 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan between October and April, on a ship with a shallow pool. Sonesta Moon Goddess and St George fit best: one under-6 sails free, one 6–11 pays half.

Do Nile cruise ships have a kids' club?

Don't count on one. Ships offer a sun-deck pool, a galabeya party and a Nubian show; the days are built around temple visits.

Is a Nile cruise OK with a toddler?

Yes, with the right ship: Sonesta lets one under-6 sail free and has a shallow pool. Bring a carrier, skip the 03:30 Abu Simbel start, and keep children out of the river.

Do children pay entry fees at the temples?

Under 6 enter free. From 6 they pay the adult price, or half with a valid student ID.

Can a family of four share one cabin on a Nile cruise?

Rarely. Sonesta Sun Goddess, Le Fayan and four Nour El Nil dahabiyas have family suites; otherwise book two neighbouring cabins.

What age can children go on a Nile cruise?

Any age on Sonesta's ships; from 6 on A&K's Nile Seray and SS Sudan; from 10 on A&K's other boats. Ask other ships in writing.
