The best time for a Nile cruise is October to April. In those months Luxor and Aswan reach 23–36 °C by day, the river is busy but every ship is sailing, and a morning in the Valley of the Kings is pleasant rather than punishing. December to February is the coolest stretch and also the busiest and dearest, with Christmas and New Year at the top of the price curve.

Summer is a different trip. From June to August the average daytime high in both towns is above 41 °C, sightseeing moves to 06:00–10:00, and a good number of ships, including all three Mayfair Cruises ships, simply stop. Prices fall to their lowest, and for some travellers that trade is worth making. One summer date breaks the pattern: the total solar eclipse over Luxor on 2 August 2027.

Rain hardly matters (Aswan gets about 2 mm a year). What shapes your days is heat, wind for balloons and feluccas, daylight and the holiday calendar.

If you have a free choice, aim for late October to November or March. Daytime highs sit around 29–36 °C, nights are mild enough to sit on the sun deck after dinner, and you avoid both the Christmas surcharges and the summer lay-ups. November is the sweet spot for many: Luxor averages about 29 °C by day and 13 °C at night.

If you want the coolest sightseeing, go December to February. Book early, expect a full quay at every stop, and pack a fleece: Luxor's average January low is about 7 °C, and the 05:00 balloon pick-up is genuinely cold.

If price matters most, look at May or September: lower rates while most ships still sail, though Luxor already averages about 39 °C by day. Full summer (June to August) is cheapest of all, but you give up choice of ship and any sightseeing after mid-morning.

The standard trips (3 nights from Aswan, 4 from Luxor) run all year; see how many nights to choose.

Luxor and Aswan are about 4–7 °C warmer than Cairo by day in every month. Cairo in January (about 19 °C) feels like a British summer day, while Luxor the same week is around 23 °C. Cairo is also the only one of the three where rain actually falls, about 11 days a year, mostly between November and April.

October and November

October starts hot (Luxor averages about 35.5 °C by day) and cools quickly: by November the average high is about 29 °C. This is the start of high season and every ship is back on the river. Abu Simbel's sun day on 22 October falls in this window. Egypt's summer time ends on the last Thursday of October, so sunset moves an hour earlier overnight and is about 17:10 by the end of the month.

December, January and February

The coolest months: about 23–26 °C by day in Luxor and Aswan, 7–12 °C at night. Days are short (sunset around 17:00 in December and January), which matters for sunset feluccas and late-afternoon temples; Valley of the Kings visits happen in the morning anyway. It is also the busiest period on the river and at the Esna lock.

March and April

March is excellent: about 30 °C by day in Luxor, 13 °C at night, and lighter crowds once the February holidays pass. April warms to about 35 °C, and a hot, dusty spring wind (the khamsin) can blow in March–May. Easter and the Egyptian spring holiday Sham el-Nessim fall in this window in most years.

May to September

Average highs of 39–42 °C, with nights of 22–28 °C. The Luxor record is 50 °C. Ships that sail through summer do their sightseeing between about 06:00 and 10:00, and the afternoons are for the shade and the pool. May and September are the transition months, when some summer-break ships are still or already sailing.

Nile cruise in summer: who sails, who stops

Summer is the low season on the river, and some companies stop altogether. Before you fall for a cheap July price, check that the ship you want actually runs that month.

Ship or company Summer pattern
Mayfair Cruises (Mayfair, Esplanade, Mayflower) No sailings June–August; season runs from the second week of September to the first week of May
Mövenpick Royal Lily, Royal Lotus, Sun Ray No sailings mid-June to the end of August
Mövenpick Hamees Sails all year
Nour El Nil dahabiyas No sailings June–August (season September–May)
Oberoi Zahra and Philae No June sailings
TUI Al Horeya and Bahareya Winter only
Mövenpick Darakum (long cruise from Cairo) No long cruises June–August or December–January
Sonesta (five cruise ships) Weekly all year
JAZ and Steigenberger ships Published year-round weekly patterns

MS Mayflower and MS Mayfair: winter ships

Mayfair Cruises, based in Heliopolis, runs three sister ships: MS Mayfair, MS Esplanade and MS Mayflower (launched November 2019, 18 suites and 38 cabins). Its 3-night cruise from Aswan sails on the Mayflower. The company states plainly that it has no operations in June, July and August "due to high temperatures", so a summer Mayflower or Mayfair booking is not possible. Its published rates are per person per night in a double and include sightseeing, entrance fees, meals and airport transport: $230 in September and May, $330 from October to 21 December and January to April, and $400 for festive departures 20–31 December (mayfaircruises.com). That table is the clearest picture of how the season moves a price.

Is a Nile cruise in July or August worth it?

It can be, if you plan around the heat. You get lower fares, quieter temples and warm evenings on deck. You give up afternoon sightseeing, some of the best small ships, and comfort in the Valley of the Kings, where the last entry moves to 17:00 in summer but nobody sensible arrives after 10:00. A summer day that works looks like this:

A July day in Luxor that works with the heat
  1. Balloon pick-up (about 04:30–05:00 in summer)optional; the listing gives the exact time

  2. West Bank sites open: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsutbe through the gate early

  3. Back on board, in the shade or the poolthe hottest hours, often above 41 °C

  4. Luxor Museum evening session opensthe cool way in

  5. Luxor Temple, last entry 19:00stay inside as it is lit up

  6. Sunset in June–Julythe evening on deck is warm

Treat 41 °C seriously, especially with children. Our guide for families on the Nile covers the heat and the early starts.

The 2 August 2027 eclipse: the one summer date that sells out

On 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse crosses Egypt. Greatest eclipse falls about 60 km east of Luxor at about 13:06 local time, giving more than six minutes of totality near Luxor (NASA eclipse path). It is the one summer date that sells out, and eclipse sailings are priced well above winter rates.

Several lines already sell eclipse sailings: Viking's "Total Eclipse on the Nile" from $10,999, Mayfair Cruises' special departures on 29 July and 2 August 2027 at $950 per person per night in a double (an exception to its summer break), and Voyageurs du Monde from 28 July to 5 August 2027 at an average of €12,500. Luxor's average August high is about 41 °C: watch from shade and drink plenty of water.

Nile cruise in December: Christmas and New Year

Late December to early January is the peak of the year. Mövenpick's Darakum sailing calendar marks Christmas and New Year departures as "peak period", A&K charges a festive rate on Sun Boat IV from 23 to 31 December ($4,235 per person for the 4-night cruise, against $3,235 in October–November and January–March), and Mayfair Cruises charges $400 per person per night from 20 to 31 December instead of $330.

The bigger surprise is often the gala dinner. Expect a compulsory New Year's Eve gala supplement on many ships, which agencies quote at roughly US$50–180 per person. Christmas Eve dinners are often optional. Ask the seller in writing whether the gala is included, compulsory or optional before you book a sailing that covers 31 December.

Other dates around the holidays:

  • Coptic Christmas, 7 January, is an Egyptian public holiday.
  • Short days: sunset is about 17:00, so sunset sailings start around 16:00.
  • Cold mornings: Luxor's average December low is about 9 °C.

For Christmas and New Year, book early and compare the cruise with its add-ons: the prices guide shows what a cruise really costs once entry fees, tips and the gala are added.

Nile cruise in January and February: Ramadan and the busy weeks

January and February bring the coolest sightseeing and a stack of holidays. For the next few years Ramadan falls inside high season too, which changes the rhythm of a trip in small ways.

Event Next dates
Ramadan about 8/9 Feb – 8/10 Mar 2027; about 28 Jan – 25 Feb 2028; about 15/16 Jan – 13 Feb 2029
Eid al-Fitr (public holiday) about 9–11 Mar 2027
Moulid of Abu el-Haggag, Luxor about two weeks before Ramadan (late January 2027, estimated)
Chinese New Year 6 Feb 2027; 26 Jan 2028
UK half-term mid-February
Abu Simbel sun day 22 February every year

Ramadan dates depend on the sighting of the moon, so they can move by a day. What changes for a cruise passenger is modest:

  • Public eating and drinking: the FCDO advises against eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight during Ramadan (FCDO safety and security), and some hotels and restaurants screen off guests who are not fasting.
  • Hours: some sites and museums shorten their hours. The official ticket shop lists Ramadan last entries for some sites (the Valley of the Kings stops admitting at 16:00 in winter and Ramadan), and the Grand Egyptian Museum ran 09:00–16:00 during Ramadan in 2025. Elsewhere, assume hours may be shorter and check.
  • Dusk traffic: roads get chaotic just before sunset as people hurry home to break the fast (iftar). Allow extra time for an evening transfer.
  • Alcohol: hotels and ships licensed for foreigners usually keep serving, but don't count on every bar staying open.
  • Cairo dinner boats: check sitting times and the show with the seller; one reseller of the Nile Pharaohs boat says there is no belly dancer during Ramadan. More on the boats in our Cairo dinner cruise guide.

The Moulid of Abu el-Haggag in Luxor centres on the mosque inside Luxor Temple, with a boat procession, Sufi music and stick fighting over about three days. It is a religious festival, not a ticketed show.

If you plan to arrive in Egypt from 1 January 2027, the visa on arrival rises from US$30 to US$33 (cash only). The e-visa is sold on visa2egypt.gov.eg.

Abu Simbel sun days, Easter and the spring holidays

Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, the rising sun reaches the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel and lights the statues of Ramesses II and the gods beside him. At least 2,000 people attended on 22 February 2026 (Gulf News). The ticket costs EGP 1,272 on those two days instead of the usual EGP 822 (official ticket shop).

Plan for it like a dawn event: transport leaves Aswan before dawn (the alarm goes around 03:30), the temple is packed, and there is no official festival programme. Abu Simbel is about 280–300 km south of Aswan, 3.5–4 hours by road. A Lake Nasser cruise that moors at Abu Simbel overnight is the calmest way to be there; book either option early. Our Abu Simbel guide covers the day trip in detail.

Spring holidays to note:

  • Western Easter: 28 March 2027, 16 April 2028, 1 April 2029. A&K publishes separate Easter rates.
  • Coptic Easter: 2 May 2027, 16 April 2028, 8 April 2029.
  • Sham el-Nessim, the Monday after Coptic Easter (3 May 2027, 17 April 2028, 9 April 2029): Egyptian families picnic outdoors and the riverbanks are crowded.
  • Eid al-Adha: about 16–19 May 2027, a four-day public holiday.

Egypt time: UTC+2, UTC+3 from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October. Balloon companies collect you about an hour before sunrise; sunset sails leave 60–90 minutes before sunset.

Luxor's sunset moves by almost three hours across the year: about 17:00 in December and January, about 19:40 in June and July. Summer time (from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October) shifts both sunrise and sunset by an hour, and for most of the year Egypt is two hours ahead of the UK.

This matters for three things:

  • The balloon: pick-up is about 1–1.5 hours before sunrise, roughly 05:00–05:30 in winter and 04:30–05:00 in summer. The Civil Aviation Authority cancels flights in strong wind; one such halt lasted four days before flights resumed on 7 May 2026. Book the flight for your first Luxor morning so a cancellation can roll to the next dawn. Details in our Luxor balloon guide.
  • Sunset feluccas: a "sunset sail" leaves about 60–90 minutes before sunset, so around 16:00 in winter and 18:15 in midsummer. Never assume a fixed time.
  • Temple visits: Luxor Temple (last entry 19:00) and Kom Ombo (last entry 20:00) are the only big sites open after dark. On a 4-night cruise from Luxor, Kom Ombo is usually visited at dusk, the best-lit temple of the trip. In Aswan, Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk and Kalabsha stop admitting at 15:00 all year.

Nile cruise prices by season

There is no fixed season discount, but every published table is lower in summer and higher over Christmas where it lists it. Examples, per person:

Ship or listing Lower rate Higher rate
Mayfair (per night, double, fees included) $230 in September and May (no June–August sailings) $330; $400 festive
A&K Sun Boat IV (4-night cruise) $1,654 (last June–August rate) $3,235; $4,235 festive
Semiramis III, agency (4 nights) $455 (May–August) $645 (September–April)
Nile Shams, agency (3 nights) $406 (May–August) $616 (September–April)
Nebu, agency (3 nights) $1,408 (May–August) $1,760 (September–April)

On the platforms, the cheapest 3-night cruise from Aswan is from $450 with a guide, and the popular version with Abu Simbel and a balloon flight is from $580. Platform listings say "5-star ship or similar": ask for the ship's name, cabin deck and the list of included entry fees before you pay, and check that the ship sails in your month.

See everything on GetYourGuide →See everything on Headout →See everything on Tiqets →Prices checked on 19 October 2026

Two warnings that apply in every season. First, entry fees are often extra: the eight sites of a standard cruise cost EGP 4,060 per foreign adult if your package excludes them. Second, tips are usually extra; budget roughly US$5–10 per person per night for the crew plus US$10–15 per person per day for your guide.

Low water, the Esna lock and other seasonal snags

Low water in December and January. Each winter the irrigation authorities cut releases from the High Dam so canals can be cleaned, and the river is at its lowest. In the 2017–18 winter, ships ran aground at Kom Ombo and passengers were moved by coach. Recent seasons have had no such strandings, but some programmes plan around it: SS Sudan changes its route from late November to mid-February, Darakum switches to short cruises, and Oberoi publishes "low water" versions that reach Dendera by road.

The Esna lock in winter. Every cruise ship sailing between Luxor and Edfu passes the lock at Esna, and the newer lock takes two large ships at a time. In the winter peak the queue can run to hours. If the lock is shut or the queue is long, operators move passengers by coach between Luxor and Esna. In December 2025 two cruise ships collided about 2 km south of the lock and one passenger died (Egypt Independent).

Rafting at busy quays. At busy moorings ships often tie up side by side, so your window may face the next ship. Don't pay extra for a "Nile view". The Luxor–Aswan cruise guide explains where each night is spent.

Dahabiyas. Many sailing houseboats run only from September to May; Nour El Nil does not sail June–August. Some operators publish summer prices, so check before you assume.

FAQ

What is the best time for a Nile cruise?

October to April. Daytime highs in Luxor and Aswan are 23–36 °C and every ship is sailing. Late October, November and March balance warm weather, mild nights and prices below the Christmas peak.

Is December a good time for a Nile cruise?

Yes for the weather: about 24 °C by day and 9 °C at night in Luxor. It is also the busiest and dearest month. Expect festive rates from about 20 December and a compulsory New Year's Eve gala supplement on many ships (roughly US$50–180 per person).

Can you do a Nile cruise in July or August?

Yes. Sonesta, Mövenpick Hamees, JAZ, Steigenberger and A&K keep sailing, and prices are lowest. Expect more than 41 °C by day, sightseeing from 06:00 to 10:00, and no sailings with Mayfair Cruises, Nour El Nil or Mövenpick's Royal Lily, Royal Lotus and Sun Ray.

What is the Nile cruise weather like in February?

About 25 °C by day in Luxor and 26 °C in Aswan, falling to 9–12 °C at night. Sunny, almost no rain. Mornings on the sun deck and the balloon pick-up are cold.

What to wear on a Nile cruise in February?

Layers. Light clothes for midday, a fleece or warm jacket for early starts and evenings on deck, a hat and sunscreen. Covered shoulders and knees are respectful at temples, and dinner on most ships is smart casual, with one galabeya (Egyptian robe) night.

Does it rain on a Nile cruise?

Hardly ever. Aswan averages about 2 mm of rain a year and Luxor about 8 mm. Wind and heat affect your plans far more than rain.

When is Ramadan, and does it affect a Nile cruise?

About 8/9 February to 8/10 March 2027, 28 January to 25 February 2028, and mid-January to mid-February 2029. Ships keep sailing; some sites may close earlier, roads are busy at dusk, and you should avoid eating or drinking in public by day.
