A felucca is the traditional wooden sailing boat of the Nile: one tall lateen (triangular) sail, no engine, a low open deck and a captain at the tiller. A felucca ride on the Nile is the cheapest good hour of an Egypt trip, and you can take one in all three places most visitors stay: Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. The real decision is where and when, not whether.

What a felucca ride on the Nile is really like

You hire the whole boat, not a seat, so a "private felucca" costs little more than a shared one: private is how feluccas normally work. The captain tacks back and forth across the river and brings you back to the same bank after an hour or two.

A felucca has no engine. On a still evening the boat is towed by a small motorboat for part of the trip; the best-rated sunset sail in Luxor says so in its own description, while most listings don't mention it. A tow is not a scam, but it is not the same experience, so ask how the wind looks before you agree a price.

The deck has little shade and the boats are small. Take a hat and water by day and a warm layer in winter, when evenings on the river turn cold.

The boat is the same everywhere; what changes is the view.

Our guide Cairo felucca Luxor felucca Aswan felucca

Aswan is the best felucca water on the Nile. The river splits around Elephantine and Kitchener's Island and granite boulders break the surface, so the captain is working the whole time. The loop passes the Botanical Garden, the Tombs of the Nobles and the Aga Khan Mausoleum. If you sail only once, sail here.

Luxor is about the sunset: boats leave the East Bank and the sun drops behind the hills above the Valley of the Kings. It pairs well with Luxor Temple, which admits visitors until 19:00.

Cairo is the city sail. Downtown and Garden City boats pass Cairo Tower and Gezira; Maadi, further south, is quieter and greener. Take it if Cairo is the only Nile you will see.

Felucca Nile cruise price: walk-up or booked

There is no official fare table anywhere on the river. At the waterfront you bargain for the whole boat and a set time, agree both before you step on board, and pay the captain in cash at the end. Booked online, the price is fixed and often includes hotel transfers:

Sunset felucca: what time to sail

Sunset is the slot everyone wants, and it moves. In Luxor the sun sets at about 17:00 in December and January and about 19:40 in June and July; Cairo runs from about 17:00 in winter to about 20:00 in midsummer. Egypt's clocks go forward on the last Friday of April and back on the last Thursday of October. A "sunset felucca at 17:00" is right in winter and far too early in summer.

Egypt time: UTC+2, UTC+3 from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October. Balloon companies collect you about an hour before sunrise; sunset sails leave 60–90 minutes before sunset.

Wind and heat decide how a sail feels; rain hardly ever falls in Luxor or Aswan. Winter evenings get cold after dark, with Luxor's night lows around 7–9 °C from December to February. More in when to go.

Felucca Nile cruise overnight: multi-day sails from Aswan

Sleeping on a felucca for a few nights is not a standard product. Three new GetYourGuide listings sail north from Aswan, downstream with the current, and each finishes by road to Luxor:

None of them reaches Luxor by water, and none has enough reviews to trust. The listings don't say what you sleep on, where the toilet is, what you eat or how much of the trip is towed. Ask all of that before paying, and ask which temple tickets are included: Kom Ombo costs EGP 450, Edfu EGP 550 and Gebel el-Silsila EGP 100 for a foreign adult (official Kom Ombo page).

Nothing sails the other way, from Luxor to Aswan, about 200 km against the current. A GetYourGuide listing called "5 Days Sailing Tour from Luxor to Aswan" is a cruise ship package, not a sailing boat.

Multi-day felucca vs dahabiya

If what you want is several days under sail on the quiet stretch between Aswan and Edfu, the tested way to do it is a dahabiya: a larger two-masted sailing houseboat with 4–12 cabins and room for 8–24 guests. It covers the same river in the opposite direction, south from Esna to Aswan with the prevailing north wind, and stops where big cruise ships can't.

Luxor's sights are not part of a dahabiya that starts at Esna, so add Luxor nights before it. Nour El Nil prices per room, not per person (a Luxury Room on its Agatha costs €6,600 for the five-night cruise in high season), and does not sail June to August (nourelnil.com). Our dahabiya guide, the best dahabiyas and the Nour El Nil review compare the boats.

Our view: for one evening, take a felucca. For several nights, take a dahabiya. A multi-night felucca from Aswan suits a traveller who is happy to rough it and asks every question first; it is not something to build a holiday around.

Already on a Nile cruise? Check before you book

Many 4-night Luxor to Aswan cruises already include a boat trip on the last full afternoon in Aswan. Mövenpick's Darakum sails round Kitchener's Island by felucca at 15:00 on the Thursday; Sonesta St George lists a felucca or motorboat and the Botanical Garden at 14:30. Platform cruise listings rarely spell this out, so ask the operator. If your ship uses a motorboat, or sails at 15:00 rather than sunset, a private felucca in the evening is still worth its price.

Some day tours end with an hour on a felucca: the Pyramids and Sphinx with a felucca ride in Cairo (from $59, 4.7 from 213 reviews) and the private East and West Bank tour with a felucca in Luxor (from $68, 4.7 from 238 reviews). Check "includes" for entry tickets. For mornings, Luxor's alternative is the hot-air balloon.

Felucca safety, tipping and etiquette

Safety standards on small boats vary. The UK Foreign Office notes that overcrowding and poor safety standards have caused accidents on Nile cruises (FCDO safety advice). The basics:

  • Ask for life jackets, and don't board a boat that is clearly overloaded.
  • Agree the price per boat, the route and the time before boarding; pay at the end.
  • Carry cash in small notes: captains don't take cards. Tip about US$5–10 per group.
  • Keep hands and feet out of the water, and don't swim.
  • Bring sun protection by day and a warm layer for winter evenings.

Felucca on the Nile: FAQ

How much is a felucca ride on the Nile?

Booked online, a private ride costs from $14–25 in Cairo, from $25–31 for a sunset sail in Luxor and from $15 for the island loop in Aswan. At the waterfront the price is per boat and agreed with the captain before you board. Add a tip of about US$5–10 per group.

Where is the best felucca ride: Cairo, Luxor or Aswan?

Aswan, for the sail itself: granite islands, cataract rocks and Kitchener's Island. Luxor is best for the sunset behind the West Bank hills, and Cairo for the city skyline from the river.

Can you take an overnight felucca from Aswan to Luxor?

Not all the way by water. A few new listings sail north from Aswan for one to three nights to Daraw, Kom Ombo or Gebel el-Silsila and finish by road in Luxor, from $230. They have one review or none, so ask about sleeping, toilets, meals and towing before you pay. For several nights under sail with cabins, a dahabiya from Esna to Aswan is the tested option.

What is the difference between a felucca and a dahabiya?

A felucca is a small open sailing boat for an hour or two. A dahabiya is a larger two-masted sailing houseboat with cabins, sleeping 8–24 guests over four or five nights between Esna and Aswan.

Do feluccas have engines?

No. When the wind drops, a felucca is towed by a motorboat; ask the captain how the wind looks before you agree a price.

What time is a sunset felucca ride?

Be on the water 60–90 minutes before sunset: around 15:30–16:00 in December, when the sun sets at about 17:00, and around 18:10–18:40 in June and July. Booked listings give the pick-up time for your date.

Plan the rest of the river: Aswan's sights, things to do in Luxor, or how the three booking sites compare in our platform guide.
