The best luxury Nile cruise ships are small. The eight on this list have between 22 and about 53 cabins, while a standard "5-star" ship carries 100 to 150 guests or more, and the Oberoi and A&K boats dock at their own landings instead of tying up side by side at the public quays. Most ships on the river call themselves five-star, so the word tells you little. What does separate them is cabin size, a real balcony, which tombs and entry fees are in the price, and which months they sail.

None of these ships is sold on GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets, so the end of the page shows the nearest luxury options you can book online today. For the wider picture of every class of ship, see the best Nile cruises and our guide to luxury Nile cruises.

How we ranked the best luxury Nile cruise ships

Four tests, in this order:

  1. Space per guest. Cabin size and the number of people sharing the sun deck and the temple visits.
  2. What the price covers. Entry fees, guide, extra-ticket tombs (Tutankhamun EGP 700, Seti I EGP 2,000) and transfers.
  3. Balconies. A Juliet balcony is a door you can open; a terrace is somewhere to sit. Many luxury cabins have neither.
  4. Itinerary. Whether the programme reaches Dendera and Abydos, which the standard 3- and 4-night cruises skip.

The best luxury Nile cruises, ranked

1. Oberoi Philae: the most space and the best tombs

The Oberoi Philae was rebuilt by Oberoi from 58 cabins down to 22 and returned to the Nile in late 2015. Its standard cabins measure 36 m², the largest of any luxury ship on this list, and the top suites have private terraces with heated whirlpools. The 4-night cruise includes Tutankhamun's tomb and Ramses VI's tomb; the 6-night version adds Dendera and Abydos. Oberoi's rates include monument entrance fees and the guide. Departure weekdays vary, so check Oberoi's sailing dates, and note there are no June sailings.

2. A&K Nile Seray: the best balconies

A&K's Nile Seray, new from November 2026, has 32 suites for 64 guests, and every suite has at least a Juliet balcony; the two Royal Suites have full balconies with a private jacuzzi. The 4-night programme includes the tombs of Seti I and Ramses VI and an after-hours visit to Tutankhamun's tomb. A&K publishes its rates: from $6,077 per person in November, $5,525 in December–January (outside Christmas) and $3,839 in May. Children are accepted from age 6. Details are on A&K's Nile Seray page.

3. Oberoi Zahra: the classic, with a 7-night option

The Oberoi Zahra has 28 cabins and suites, an 11-metre pool and The Oberoi Spa, and has sailed under Oberoi since 2007. It mostly leaves Luxor on Tuesdays and Aswan on Saturdays for 3, 4 or 7 nights; the 7-night trip adds Dendera and an optional Abu Simbel day. Entrance fees and guide are included. The catch: standard cabins have picture windows, not balconies. Only the suites have terraces. No public rates; a UK agent sells a 13-day trip built around it from £8,495 per person, excluding flights.

4. A&K Sun Boat IV: the luxury ship with a price list

A&K Sanctuary (formerly Sanctuary Retreats) publishes the only full seasonal rate table among the luxury fleets. Sun Boat IV, with 38 cabins, costs $3,235 per person for four nights in a Nile Deck cabin in October–November and January–March and $4,235 over Christmas; the June–August 2026 rate was $1,654. Entrance fees and excursions are included; flights, transfers, drinks and tips are not. Only its two Royal Suites have balconies. Children must be 10 or older.

5. Sonesta Star Goddess: terraces for every suite

The Sonesta Star Goddess has 33 suites, each with a private terrace. It is also the only Sonesta ship leaving Luxor on Saturday and Aswan on Wednesday, useful when the Monday/Friday ships do not fit your flights. Sonesta sails all year. Booked direct on sonesta.com, the rate covers cabin and meals only; sightseeing is extra.

6. Historia: bookable like a hotel

The Historia is one of the newer ships, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World with 44 rooms, a heated sun-deck pool and the Seneb Spa. You can book it through SLH like a hotel, leaving Luxor on Monday or Aswan on Friday. An agency sells it from $1,339 for 3 nights and $1,719 for 4, making it one of the most affordable ships on this list.

7. SS Sudan: the heritage choice

The SS Sudan is a paddle steamer launched in 1921 for Thomas Cook; Agatha Christie sailed on it in 1933. It has 24 cabins and suites, runs on battery power between 23:00 and 07:00, and its 5-night programme sails north to Qena for Dendera and Abydos before heading to Aswan, with Ramses VI's tomb on the way. From late November to mid-February low water changes the route. It is sold only inside tailor-made trips: in France about €5,200–7,000 for 8 days; in the UK through Original Travel. No children under 6. See the ship's own site.

8. Soleil: the newest design

The Soleil launched in late 2024 with interiors by Egyptian architect Vanessa Victor, a sun-deck pool and an indoor pool in a double-height spa. It leaves Luxor on Monday and Aswan on Friday. Prices vary by a factor of two between sellers: one agency quotes about $1,279 for 3 nights, another $2,280 for 4 days. Get at least two quotes.

If entry fees matter (on a standard cruise they add EGP 4,060 per adult for the eight core sites), Oberoi and A&K are the honest prices. On a Sonesta direct booking, add a guided programme on top. Tips are usually extra; budget roughly $5–10 per person per night for the crew plus $10–15 per day for the guide.

Best luxury Nile cruise for Dendera and Abydos

The standard Luxor–Aswan route skips the two finest temples north of Luxor. Only the longer luxury programmes reach them: the Oberoi Philae's 6-night cruise (Dendera and Abydos), the SS Sudan's 5-night cruise (both), and the Oberoi Zahra's 7-night cruise (Dendera). In low-water months Oberoi switches to a road transfer to Dendera, about 90 minutes each way.

  1. 0 kmLuxorStart or end of every standard cruise. Ships moor along the East Bank and at private docks south of town; Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank are visited from here.
  2. 50 kmEsnaAbout 50 km upriver. Ships pass the Esna lock (two ships per lockage), often at night; many ships stop here overnight without visiting the temple.
  3. EdfuBetween Esna and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus is visited by horse carriage or coach from the quay, usually in the morning.
  4. Kom OmboRiverside temple, open for entry until 20:00: upstream ships stop at dusk, downstream ships come early in the morning.
  5. 200 kmAswanAbout 200 km by river from Luxor. Philae, the High Dam and a felucca or motorboat round Kitchener's Island; last night of a dahabiya trip at the Aswan bridge dock.

Distances along the river, rounded; ships also stop at the Esna lock and sometimes moor at Kom Ombo for the night.

When the luxury ships sail

Both Oberoi ships stop in June. A&K and Sonesta publish year-round departures. The SS Sudan runs a different programme from late November to mid-February. The coolest and busiest months are December to February, and Christmas carries surcharges: A&K's festive rate is $4,235 on Sun Boat IV against $3,235 the rest of the high season. Plan with our when to go guide.
