A Sanctuary Nile cruise is one of the few luxury Nile trips you can price and book like a hotel: four nights on a small boat, guided twice a day, with entrance fees included and a published rate for every cabin and season. Our verdict in one line: the best-documented luxury fleet on the river, worth the money if you value small numbers and clear inclusions, but not cheap, and transfers are extra.

Verdict
4.5/ 5
A&K Sanctuary runs five genuinely small boats from private landings, includes entrance fees and an Egyptologist, and is the only luxury fleet that publishes a full seasonal rate table. Nile Seray adds tombs most cruises never include. Against it: flights and transfers are not in the cruise price, Sun Boat IV has balconies only in its two Royal Suites, and in high season a night on board costs several times what a standard 5-star ship charges.

Sanctuary Nile cruise: what "Sanctuary" means now
Sanctuary Retreats no longer exists as a brand. In December 2024 Abercrombie & Kent renamed it A&K Sanctuary, and the old sanctuaryretreats.com address now forwards to A&K's own site. Same boats, new name: they are now styled "Sun Boat IV, an A&K Sanctuary" and so on. If you read that Sun Boat IV "belongs to Sanctuary, not A&K", that is out of date — they are one company.
Each boat is sold in two ways: as a stand-alone 4-night cruise priced per person on abercrombiekent.com, and as the Nile part of A&K's own escorted Egypt journeys (see our Abercrombie & Kent review). Other companies use the boats too: Scenic's long Egypt tour sails on Sun Boat III (see Scenic and Emerald).

Sun Boat IV Nile cruise
Sun Boat IV is the classic A&K boat, decorated in Art Deco style, with 38 cabins over four decks, including two Presidential and two Royal Suites. Standard cabins are 15–18 m², most with floor-to-ceiling windows; the lowest category, Nile Deck, has cabin windows instead. Only the two Royal Suites (57 m²) have private balconies, so don't book a standard cabin expecting one. The turquoise-tiled pool on the sun deck is heated in winter. Under-15s share a cabin with an adult.
Sanctuary Nile Adventurer
The Nile Adventurer is the smaller sister: 30 cabins, up to 60 guests, four decks. Most are Standard cabins of 14–17 m² with half-height windows; there are two Junior Suites (28 m²) and two Presidential Suites (46 m²) with wraparound balconies. On the top deck there's a pool with private cabanas. In season its entry price equals Sun Boat IV's, so choose on dates and cabin type.
Nile Seray, the new flagship
Nile Seray is A&K Sanctuary's fifth Nile boat, new from November 2026. It has 32 suites for up to 64 guests, with a staff ratio of 1.5 to 1. Every suite has at least a Juliet balcony, and the two Royal Suites (66 m²) have full balconies with a private jacuzzi. The rooftop pool has canopied daybeds. A&K calls it Egypt's only all-suite Nile riverboat; that isn't quite right, as Sonesta's Star Goddess is also all-suite, but Seray is the most expensive boat A&K runs on the river.
What sets Seray apart is the sightseeing. Its inclusions list tickets for the tomb of Seti I and the tomb of Ramses VI, plus private visits to Tutankhamun's tomb after the West Bank closes and to the tomb of Amenhotep III. Seti I's tomb alone costs EGP 2,000 per person at the gate, so this is real value, not decoration. It is also the boat to choose with children aged 6 to 9.
Sun Boat III and Zein Nile Chateau
Sun Boat III, decorated in 1920s style, has 16 cabins for up to 32 guests and no published price: A&K describes it as an elegant charter whose itinerary can be tailored to a group. Zein Nile Chateau is a dahabiya (a traditional Nile sailing houseboat) with six cabins, including two signature suites, sold only as a private charter with a bespoke route. Both are for groups and special occasions; ask A&K for a quote.

Itinerary and what's included
Sun Boat IV, Nile Adventurer and Nile Seray sail four nights between Luxor and Aswan, in either direction, with "twice-daily excursions" led by an Egyptologist. Four nights downstream is a night more than most 5-star ships give you from Aswan to Luxor (see the Aswan to Luxor cruise guide). You fly to Luxor (about an hour from Cairo) or Aswan (about an hour and a quarter), then transfer 30 to 45 minutes to A&K's own docking area.
- 0 kmLuxorStart or end of every standard cruise. Ships moor along the East Bank and at private docks south of town; Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank are visited from here.
- 50 kmEsnaAbout 50 km upriver. Ships pass the Esna lock (two ships per lockage), often at night; many ships stop here overnight without visiting the temple.
- EdfuBetween Esna and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus is visited by horse carriage or coach from the quay, usually in the morning.
- Kom OmboRiverside temple, open for entry until 20:00: upstream ships stop at dusk, downstream ships come early in the morning.
- 200 kmAswanAbout 200 km by river from Luxor. Philae, the High Dam and a felucca or motorboat round Kitchener's Island; last night of a dahabiya trip at the Aswan bridge dock.
Distances along the river, rounded; ships also stop at the Esna lock and sometimes moor at Kom Ombo for the night.
Included: all meals, mineral water, tea and coffee at meals, breakfast juices, afternoon tea, and the guided excursions on the itinerary, with transport, entrance fees and port charges.
Not included: other drinks, flights, transfers, insurance, laundry, the spa and tips. A&K lists optional extras: the Luxor hot-air balloon, a felucca (traditional sailing boat) around Elephantine Island, a Nubian village visit with a camel ride, and the Aswan spice market.
Dress: casual by day, smart casual at dinner; A&K's FAQ says shorts and T-shirts are not permitted at dinner.
The private dock matters
At busy public moorings, ships often tie up side by side, so your window may face the next ship. A&K docks at its own landing, which is one of the quieter advantages of paying luxury prices.
Sanctuary Nile Adventurer price and Sun Boat IV prices
A&K publishes every rate in US dollars per person per cruise, two sharing. The table shows the current rates, with the past June–August 2026 summer for comparison:
| Boat and cabin | June–August 2026 (past) | May and September | October–November, January–March | Christmas week (23–31 Dec) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun Boat IV, Nile Deck | $1,654 | $2,080 | $3,235 | $4,235 |
| Sun Boat IV, Presidential Suite | — | — | $4,866 | — |
| Sun Boat IV, Royal Suite | $5,587 | — | $7,366 | $9,766 |
| Nile Adventurer, Nile Deck | $1,654 | — | $3,235 | — |
| Nile Adventurer, Junior Suite | — | — | $3,995 | — |
| Nile Adventurer, Presidential Suite | — | — | $4,866 | — |
The Sun Boat IV single rate in season is $4,853 for a Nile Deck cabin, and the child rate is $2,588. Between Nile Deck and the suites sit the Main, Bridge and Promenade categories ($3,417 to $3,566 in season).
Nile Seray is priced separately: from $6,077 per person for a Signature Suite on the Main Deck in November and February–March, rising to $12,277 for a Royal Suite; from $5,525 in non-festive December and January; $6,744 over Christmas and Easter; and from $3,839 in May. Sun Boat III and Zein: enquire.
Summer is much cheaper: the same cabin cost $1,654 in June–August 2026 against $3,235 in season. Check A&K for next summer's rates, and remember that June–August means 41 °C days. Newlyweds get 50 % off one partner's stay (printed on every boat page). Add flights, transfers and tips; there is no official tipping rule, but agencies suggest roughly US$5–10 per person per night for the crew and US$10–15 per person per day for the guide.

What travellers say, and what to check
We have not collected guest reviews for these boats, so we won't summarise them. Before you book, check these points with A&K:
- Which direction your dates sail, and on which day the West Bank falls.
- Whether your cabin has a window that opens or a balcony — on Sun Boat IV, only the Royal Suites have one.
- On Nile Seray, which tomb visits are confirmed for your date.
- How you get to the boat: transfers are not in the cruise price.
- Child policy: from 10 on most boats, from 6 on Nile Seray, under-15s sharing with an adult.
How to book a Sanctuary Nile cruise
Book on A&K's site, where the boat pages show live rates: start at abercrombiekent.com/sanctuary, or go straight to the Nile Seray page. Travel agents sell the same cruises. If you want everything arranged (Cairo, flights, Abu Simbel by air), A&K's small-group "Egypt and the Nile" journey uses Sun Boat IV, with some departures moving to Nile Seray — see the Abercrombie & Kent review.
No booking platform sells A&K Sanctuary boats. The nearest thing you can book on GetYourGuide today is a small-boat trip: a 4-day luxury dahabiya from Aswan to Luxor, from $1,100 per person, rated 4.8 from 58 reviews. It doesn't name the boat, it is not an A&K product, and you should check whether entrance fees are included — but it gives you the small-boat feel at about a third of the price.

Alternatives to a Sanctuary Nile cruise
- Oberoi Zahra and Oberoi Philae: the other luxury fleet that includes entrance fees and the guide; the Philae's 4-night programme includes Tutankhamun and Ramses VI. No public rates, and no June sailings.
- Sonesta St George: bigger ship with a sightseeing-free direct rate; cheaper, but you pay for tours on top.
- SS Sudan: a 1921 paddle steamer with five nights including Dendera and Abydos.
- The luxury Nile cruise guide compares every option side by side.
Is Sanctuary Retreats the same as A&K Sanctuary?
Yes. Abercrombie & Kent renamed Sanctuary Retreats as A&K Sanctuary in December 2024. The Nile boats — Sun Boat III, Sun Boat IV, Nile Adventurer and the dahabiya Zein Nile Chateau, now joined by Nile Seray — are the same, and the old website forwards to A&K.
How much is a Sun Boat IV Nile cruise?
A&K's published rate is $3,235 per person for four nights in a Nile Deck cabin in October–November and January–March, and $4,235 in Christmas week. The Royal Suite is $7,366 in season. In June–August 2026 the Nile Deck rate was $1,654, so summer is far cheaper.
What is the Sanctuary Nile Adventurer price?
From $3,235 per person for four nights in season (Nile Deck), $3,995 for a Junior Suite and $4,866 for a Presidential Suite; the Nile Deck rate was $1,654 in June–August 2026. Flights and transfers are extra.
Are entrance fees included on a Sanctuary Nile cruise?
Yes. Guided excursions with transport, entrance fees and port charges are included. Drinks beyond water, tea and coffee, flights, transfers and tips are not.
Can children go on a Sanctuary Nile cruise?
Sun Boat IV, Nile Adventurer and Sun Boat III take children from 10, Nile Seray from 6, and the Zein Nile Chateau dahabiya any age. On Sun Boat IV and Nile Seray, under-15s share a cabin with an adult.
Can I book A&K Sanctuary boats on GetYourGuide?
No platform sells them. Book with A&K or a travel agent. For a small-boat trip on a platform, the 4-day luxury dahabiya from Aswan to Luxor is the closest comparable product.
