A Tauck Nile cruise means the "Jewels of the Nile" tour: ten days in Egypt, four nights of them on a luxury Oberoi ship, with the logistics, the flights within Egypt and the guiding done for you. Our verdict: one of the most polished ways to see Egypt, built on Oberoi's award-listed ships and one genuinely exclusive visit — but you are paying for the package, and you could book the same ships direct.

Tauck Nile river cruise: a tour, not a ship

Tauck does not own a Nile ship and doesn't run one. It books cabins on the two ships of the Oberoi Group, an Indian hotel company: The Oberoi Philae and The Oberoi Zahra. So "Tauck Nile cruise reviews" are really reviews of a Tauck tour on an Oberoi ship. Whether Tauck charters whole sailings is not published, so don't assume your ship will carry only Tauck guests — ask.

The point of booking through Tauck is everything around the river: flights within Egypt, an escorted programme, and access arranged for its groups that you can't buy on your own.

Tauck Jewels of the Nile: what's in the 10 days

Tauck publishes the tour as "Egypt: Jewels of the Nile", 10 days. The main elements:

  • A 4-night Nile cruise aboard the Oberoi Philae or the Oberoi Zahra, between Luxor and Aswan.
  • A private after-hours visit to the Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun's tomb — a Tauck exclusive. The valley normally stops admitting visitors at 16:00 in winter and 17:00 in summer, so this is a visit without the daytime crowds.
  • Abu Simbel by chartered flight, round trip from Aswan. By road, Abu Simbel is about 280–300 km away, 3.5–4 hours each way, with a pre-dawn start.
  • Three nights at The St. Regis Cairo (nights 7 to 9).
  • Flights within Egypt, which Tauck lists as on-tour air.

Tauck also sells "Jordan & Egypt: Petra to the Pyramids", including a small-group version, with a 3-night Nile cruise on the Oberoi Zahra.

The ships: Oberoi Philae or Oberoi Zahra

Your departure determines the ship. They are not the same, so check before you book.

The Oberoi Philae was built in 1996 and rebuilt by Oberoi, which cut it from 58 cabins to 22; it returned to the river in late 2015. It carries 44 guests on five decks, has an 11-metre pool, and its 36 m² standard cabins are among the largest on the river. The top suites have terraces with heated outdoor whirlpools.

The Oberoi Zahra has 28 cabins and suites and has sailed for Oberoi since 2007. Its Luxury Cabins are 26.4 m² with picture windows — not balconies; only the suites have private terraces with whirlpools. It also has an 11-metre pool and an Oberoi spa.

On both ships, Oberoi's own rates include monument entrance fees and guiding, and both stop sailing in June. Oberoi lists awards for the Zahra, including Travel + Leisure's World's Best "Best River Cruisers" ranking.

Tauck Nile cruise price: is Tauck worth the money?

"Egypt: Jewels of the Nile" costs from £8,990 per person on Tauck's UK site. US prices shown for different versions of the tour range from $9,690 to $11,490.

Why are Tauck tours so expensive? Here the money goes on the Oberoi ship, the chartered Abu Simbel flights, three nights at the St. Regis, the internal flights and the private Valley of the Kings visit. Compared with similar escorted luxury trips:

Trip Length Ship Price
Tauck, Egypt: Jewels of the Nile 10 days Oberoi Philae or Zahra from £8,990
Steppes Travel, Luxury Egypt with Oberoi Zahra 13 days (6-night cruise) Oberoi Zahra from £8,495, excluding flights
Lindblad–National Geographic, Passage Through Egypt 11–12 days Oberoi Philae from $13,512
Abercrombie & Kent, Egypt and the Nile 10 days Sun Boat IV or Nile Seray from US$16,995 / £13,760

Is it worth it? If you want the after-hours Tutankhamun visit and Abu Simbel without the 03:30 coach, and you would rather not plan anything, yes — Tauck costs much less than A&K's journey, though Steppes' longer Zahra trip is cheaper before flights. If you are happy to organise Cairo and flights yourself, book the Oberoi ship direct on oberoihotels.com, where rates include entrance fees and the guide, and spend the difference elsewhere.

What travellers say, and what to check

We have not collected reviews of Tauck's Egypt tours, so we won't summarise them. Before you book, ask Tauck or your agent:

  • Which Oberoi ship your departure uses — the Philae's cabins are bigger, and its 4-night programme includes the tombs of Tutankhamun and Ramses VI when booked with Oberoi.
  • Which direction the cruise sails and on which day the after-hours visit falls.
  • Whether international flights are included from your country — Tauck lists on-tour air.
  • The deposit and cancellation terms in Tauck's booking conditions.

How to book a Tauck Nile cruise

Book with Tauck or a travel agent; the tour page is Egypt: Jewels of the Nile. To look at the ships themselves, see the Oberoi Zahra and the Oberoi Philae on Oberoi's site.

No booking platform sells Tauck or the Oberoi ships. The nearest package you can book on GetYourGuide is an all-inclusive 6-day Egypt highlights and Nile cruise from Cairo, from $1,700 per person, rated 4.8 from 56 reviews. It is a very different product — the ship isn't named and it is not a luxury Oberoi sailing — but it covers Cairo and the Nile with flights in one booking.

Alternatives to Tauck

Does Tauck have its own Nile river cruise ship?

No. Tauck books the Oberoi Philae or the Oberoi Zahra, two ships owned and run by the Oberoi Group. Tauck has no ship of its own on the Nile.

How much is the Tauck Jewels of the Nile tour?

From £8,990 per person on Tauck's UK site, for ten days including flights within Egypt. US versions of the tour are shown at $9,690 to $11,490.

Which ship is used on Tauck's Nile cruise?

Either the Oberoi Philae or the Oberoi Zahra, for four nights, depending on the departure. On "Petra to the Pyramids" the cruise is three nights on the Oberoi Zahra.

What is the Tauck exclusive in Egypt?

A private after-hours visit to the Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun's tomb, arranged for Tauck guests after the valley closes to the public.

Is Tauck worth the money for Egypt?

If you want Abu Simbel by chartered flight, the after-hours Tutankhamun visit and no planning, it is fairly priced: well below A&K's 10-day journey. If you can organise Cairo yourself, booking the Oberoi ship direct costs less.
